• When Lincoln was elected president South Carolina decided to secede. Then Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas followed.

• Started the Civil War.

• Made Fort Sumter surrender.

The Battle of Antietam:1862

• First Battle in the American Civil War

• The single most bloody battle in American History.

The Emancipation Proclamation:1863

• Issued by Lincoln to set slaves free in the rebel states.

• Set about Fifty-Thousand slaves free and eventually set 3.1 million out of 4 million slaves free.

• Had the most casualties in the war.

• The turning point/midway of the war.

• Stopped Robert E. Lee from invading the North.

• Reconstruction of the South.

• Passed by both houses of congress but was vetoed by Lincoln.

• Outlawed Slavery.

• The first reconstruction policy set into action after the war.

• The last battle before the Confederate surrendered to the Union.

• The first president to be assassinated

• Assassinated by John Wilks Booth

Freedman's Bureau is Created:1865

• A U.S federal government agency that aided Freedmen in 1865–1869, during the Reconstruction era of the United States after the war.

• It was supposed to last one year after Civil War.

Ku Klux Klan is Created:1865

• Started by six veterans of the Confederate Army.

• No organizational structure.

• Many groups like this formed mostly in the south.

The 14th Amendment is Passed:1865

• It was illegal to deprive any person of John Locke’s Natural Rights: Life, Liberty, and Property.

• In other words, no discrimination.

First Reconstruction Act is Passed:1867

• No protection for life or property in the rebel states and no legal state government.

• It is necessary that peace and good order should be enforced in said States until loyal and republican State governments can be legally established.

Second Reconstruction Act is Passed:1867

• African-Americans participated in regaining their rights that they had lost from the Jim Crow laws.

• African-Americans began holding various political offices.

Andrew Johnson is Impeached:1868• First President to get

impeached in U.S. History.

• Impeached because he didn’t go through congress like he was supposed to

• He was acquitted by one vote.

Ulysses S Grant becomes president:1869

• Grant's relationship with Johnson had progressively gotten worse.

• Breaking the tradition, Johnson did not ride with or attend Grant's Inauguration at the Capitol.

The Compromise of 1877 is Passed:1877

• The unwritten “compromise” settled the 1876 U.S. presidential election.

• Stopped Reconstruction in the South.

• Involved Democrats that controlled the House of Representatives allowing Electoral Vote to take action.
