3rd/4th Grade Lesson Plan
Same Time Different Place
Objective: The objective is to add and subtract time and learn about
different time zones in the United States.
Materials:
Wall Clock
U.S. Time zone map
Paper
Color pencils
Paper plates
Brass paper fastener
Scissors
Introduce activity: Ask students if they have relatives or close friends who
live in a different state.
Activity: Have students locate on the map where their relatives/friends live.
Explain to the students the time zones (Pacific Standard Time,
Mountain Standard Time, Central Standard Time, and Eastern
Standard Time).
Have students make their own clock with the materials provided.
Allow them to figure out the time zones in different states.
Then, compare time from one state to another to find the
difference. For example, grandma lives in Omaha, Nebraska and it
is 10:00 a.m. and we are in San Diego, California and it is 8:00 a.m.
What is the time difference between these two places?
Ask students questions while they work on the activity to reinforce
the objective of the lesson plan.
Resource: WorldTimeZone.com, a world globe.
