President’s Message A Watercolor Perspective: Hop Onboard Our
Professional Train
I recently had a great conversation with UWS member,
Roxane Pfister. For my second interview on The
Relevancy of Watercolor series, I wanted to talk to a
member who paints in watercolor but who considers
another her primary medium. Roxane fits the bill. Her
beautiful oil paintings are represented at the Logan Fine
Art Gallery in Logan, Utah.
Roxane and I also share a background in math; she is a practicing statistician, and
I have a degree in applied math. I feel there are many parallels between Art &
Math. I will not tire you with our Euclidean vs. Non-Euclidean Geometry
comparison, other than to say that watercolor is more like the latter. It is often
misunderstood and under appreciated. We feel it takes a lot more study and
practice to understand and master the basics.
For this article, I decided to take off on the idea of the Parallel Postulate in
Euclidean Geometry – That is; parallel lines, if extended into infinity, will never
converge.
Well any artist who has transcribed a three-dimensional subject on to a two-
dimensional surface knows this is not true! After all, parallel lines converge at the
vanishing point on the horizon line, right? Just ask Tom Schaller, our recent
workshop Instructor and master of perspective.
Imagine a train, loaded with watercolor artists, running on parallel rails. The train
can head toward the vanishing point and disappear into the distance, or the train
can rush toward the viewer, focused on presenting professional, quality art,
commanding attention and respect. Is our watercolor society train an old Ghost
Train trotted out for tourists, or a fast-moving locomotive with passengers
clamoring to jump onboard and see what watercolor is all about?
Let’s revive the old Ghost Train. Passengers heading for the following stations:
Watercolor Workshops, Statewide All-media Competitions; Galleries, Art Museums,
Airports, Shopping Malls, Plein Air Events, Art Collectors, and Professional
Watercolor Exhibitions. All aboard!

UWS Fall Member
Exhibition
The UWS Fall Member Exhibition is
open! For six months, Utah Watercolor
Society artists, volunteers, and Visual
Art Institute Staff have worked with the
exhibition juror, Thomas Schaller, to
create an incredible water media
exhibition now on display at The
Visual Art Institute (2901 S. Highland
Drive, Salt Lake City, UT). Selected
from 142 entries, 71 amazing works of
art are available for viewing. VAI is
open during the following hours: M-F
12:00pm – 6:30pm. Sat 9:00am –
1:00pm through November 6th.
Thomas Schaller did not
disappoint...in fact, he WOWED! We
had a large group, but we made it
work for him and he made it work for
us. The group clicked, making Tom's
time in Utah productive, comfortable
and memorable. Some take-aways
from Tom include:
* Tell your story
* Paint what has meaning for you
* Connect, connect, connect
* Color can be your darks
* Gravity is your friend
Comments from the group
“Tom provided techniques and tips
ready to apply to my paintings without
taking away my own voice. He made
me want to delve into the paints, no
hesitation, no overthinking. It's only
paper and it is already started. All the
whites are there.”
teaching knowledge and style. All of
Thomas's demos were of Utah
settings, from Big Cottonwood Canyon
to Zion. Artists replicated his demos
using his techniques for landscape,
architecture, sky, and twilight, using
varied formats to bring power to the
scene. Artists also painted subjects of
meaning to them. No one shied away
from color or darks. For Tom, nearly
every demo was a sale. In addition to
the demos, Tom sold many of the
paintings he brought with him and all
of his DVDs. We ended the workshop
with a critique of each artist's paintings
and a going away gift for Tom and Otis
(his dog and constant companion).

Fall Workshop and
Member Meeting Recap:
Thomas Schaller
In addition to the week-long workshop,
Tom shared his many thoughts and
painted at the UWS Members Meeting
in October and attended our 2015 Fall
Member Exhibition reception as
well. He praised the level of our art
and marveled at the natural beauty of
the home state where we paint.
Tom and Otis left on Saturday,
heading to Bryce Canyon with our gift,

felt like what I learned from him can
be instantly [incorporate] in my work;
not just a new gimmick but a clear
direction. I felt like I made some major
break-throughs this week. I wish he
could come back every year!”
“What a great teacher! He was so
generous in sharing his experience
and wisdom. His humility is very
inspiring and encourages one to be an
honest painter. “Paint for yourselves.”
“I came back in St Louis full of energy
and strong desires of paintings and
creation, thanks to the great UWS
group and Tom Schaller. I am really
grateful to you for that!”
“He was definitely one of our best...not
only a fabulous artist but a generous
and positive instructor, as well. [They]
don't always go together!”
The workshop artists produced
beautiful paintings daily, impressing
Thomas, but also resulting from his

7 UWS Paint Spot, November/December 2015
Tuesday evening Mr. Reid and his wife visited our CVC chapter meeting. He
answered questions and told stories, and we came to know him better. Thank you
to Colleen Reynolds for the use of a portable P.A. system! It was a fun evening.
The next day we worked from models. Mr. Reid taught us a lot about measuring
proportions, and giving total concentration to precision in the center of the face.
One of the things he said that day that will stay with me was, “It’s better to leave it
unsaid than say it badly.”
On Thursday, we headed out to the marsh to do plein air painting. We had a
surprise visitor. John Singer Sargent showed up in Mr. Reid’s painting! He likes to
have an object in the foreground, so he brought and old photo. He encouraged the
rest of us to paint each other.
The final day we worked from historical photos. We did more measuring and
marking during our drawings. He urged us to force ourselves not to overpaint, and
do objects and cast shadows simultaneously.
It was a great workshop, and a lot of fun to be able to spend time with artists from
all over. Brenda Brunello worked hard and did a great job orchestrating it all! I have
enjoyed sharing my experiences with the elementary students where I work. I was
so excited to show them the photos I took of Charles Reid’s excellent contour
drawings. They are learning about contour drawings, and I love hearing the ooh’s
and ah’s when I can show them really good examples.
Have a great month, and I hope to see you all at more of these events!

Blog Spot: www.uws-cvc.blogspot.com
CVC Member Meetings are held the
second Tuesday of each month at the
Logan Library.
This has been a great month for our Utah Watercolor Society
Cache Valley Chapter. Many of us made the trip to Salt Lake
for the phenomenal October meeting featuring Thomas
Schaller. It was so worthwhile for us to watch his approach to
painting the beautiful, familiar landscape of Zion National
Park!
The very next week, we enjoyed a workshop by Charles
Reid. The first two days were spent working on still lifes with
flowers, duck decoys, fruit, and pottery. In regards to
drawing, he said, “Assume you are going to make mistakes.
Use the bad line to find the good line.”

Social Recap
The kick-off for the 2015-2016 year
was fun but also educational.
Our new President, Colleen Reynolds,
provided us with a trivia game, where
we learned useful information about
our wonderful organization. Prizes
were earned by members who knew
the answers.
We also benefitted from a great
presentation from Past President,
Kristi Grussendorf, who gave an
informative demonstration and training
about proper framing techniques. We
should now all be able to deliver a
professional presentation of our work.
The delicious food was catered by
Lindsey Swatski, and we also learned
of the exclusive UWS framing deal
offered by Alpine Mat Company.
It is going to be another fabulous year,
with lots of opportunities for growth,
friendship and inspiration for members
of the Utah Watercolor Society!
