60C Veale Associates - September 2016

After some years of use, the St.Marys Road existing entrance hall of the University of West London was in urgent need of refurbishment. However, due to the limited budget it was clear that very little change could be made to the building. Therefore the adaptation – whether related to the required rooms or energy efficiency – had to be achieved through means of technical and aesthetic renovation of the existing spaces and surfaces. The lighting fixtures are behind the operators with their bodies casting shadows and restricting light onto the desk, the lighting level is very low - 150lux and should be around 300lux, the contrast between the front counter lighting and operators is to great emphasising the shadows in which the operators work. The plans to remove the bright lighting from the desk front will have some benefit but the nature of the exiting lighting will still leave the area looking dark. It is urged that the consideration be given to improving the quality of lighting in the operator’s area - In addition, the general lighting is poor and adds to the general poor impression of the reception area. The floor has a relatively low reflectivity so much of the light is wasted and exacerbates the under-lighted effect of the area. Huge improvement could be made by replacing the existing fixtures for appropriate LED fittings. The emphasis to encourage more dialogue with the public realm led to the decision to totally change the facades of the entrance hall reception counter, as well as the current lighting scheme, and to incorporate the new facade, LED fittings and a new sign of the University in them. These new items allow “large-format” glimpses into the building and anchor the latter in its surroundings. The consistent surface treatment of all of the facade’s opaque components has a calming effect on the heterogeneous building massing. The original counter facade received a new outer skin: the building has been equipped with a ventilated cavity facade, including insulation, covered in laser cut wooden cladding with LED strips.S

OBSERVATIONS Building the future

80C Veale Associates - September 2016

At present there are different light colour lamps (possibly types of bulbs), some out and most quite ineffective. The lighting fixtures are behind the operators with their bodies casting shadows and restricting light onto the desk.

Following the newly refurbished restaurant which provides excellent industry standards for teaching and learning for those students who are studying for positions in the International hospitality industry. The plans had been: Removing the bright lighting from the desk front to have some benefit with the nature of the exiting lighting where this will still leave the area looking dark so the suggestion is to improve the quality of existing lighting specially in the operator’s area a lighting scheme was provided for these purposes.

FILLING EXPECTATIONSmake the best choices for the student’s Campus

The refurbishment project will hold the on-going constant operational activities that the building has experienced over the years. The University is investing in St. Marys Road Hall to repair the building issues, upgrade service installations and improve the accessibility. The project will create additional public and support spaces, to enable the building to deliver its core functions more effectively and to allow it to be used more frequently.

The refurbishment is a combination of meticulous restoration and sympathetic new build. The Ealing Campus is also being landscaped as part of the works to provide a more welcoming and accessible space with a new entrance into St. Marys Road Hall.
