Pre-Colonial Features• Made from lightweight materials • Airy and easy to clean• Vulnerable to typhoons and fire• Bahay-Kubo

Spanish Colonial Features• The locals learned from Spaniards how to

quarry, prepare the stones and make bricks.• Bahay na Bato• Fire-resistant building by using mortar• Still vulnerable to earthquakes

OPENINGS• Large sliding windows made of Capiz Shells.

ROOFS• High-pitched tile roof

ORNAMENTS• Made of terracotta and decorative friezes.

built in the 1820’s.

The Antillean House

• Resemble houses in the Antilles or West Indies.• Epitome of elegance and graceful living.• Most owners of the Antillean houses had

traveled to Europe and/or their children studied in Spain, Germany or France.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS AND SPACE REQUIREMENTS

OF ANTILLEAN HOUSES

ZAGUAN OR PATIO

• An outdoor space for dining and recreation.

• Usually paved with stones.

SALA OR LIVING AREA• The bigger the

sala and the more ornate the furnishings, the richer the owner of the house.

• Chairs are handcrafted with embossed floral and made of the best and hardest wood.

BEDROOM• The

bedrooms have hand-crafted four poster beds with cane-woven bottoms.

• With lace curtains

PRAYER ROOM• Big Filipino Spanish houses have separate

prayer room with a church-size altar with saint statues, a crucifix, and always a patron saint of the area

DINING AREA

 • Furnished

with imported chinaware, silverware and hardwood furnitures.

KITCHEN• Kitchen is bigger and has enough kitchen

utensils and working space where the household domestic help works.

AZOTEA OR OPEN PORCH

• Usually provided with ceramic balustrade.

• It bears much of the household traffic.

• Found in Iloilo City beside Colegio De San Jose.

• The Antillan House was built by Don Emong Montinola.

   

Casa Mariquit• Built in

1803.• The former

home of Philippines former VP Fernando Lopez.

• This also served as a bank during their time. 

Casa Manila• A museum

built in 1850 imposing stone-and wood structure.

• One of the grand houses in Barrio San Luis.
