University of Idaho National College Health Assessment (NCHA) Fall 2011
College Campuses Nationwide
• 1 in 4 women and 1 in 12 men will be sexually assaulted before leaving college
• 44% of victims of sexual assault are under age 18
• 80% are under age 30
• Women ages 20-24 are at the greatest risk of nonfatal intimate partner violence.
• 1 in 12 women and 1 in 45 men will be stalked in their lifetime.
• Less than 10 percent of all sexual assaults are reported to law enforcement.
CULTURE CHANGEDiffusion of Innovation/ Social Diffusion Theory
If enough natural and influential opinion
leaders within a community visibly adopt, endorse and
support an innovative behavior, culture change happens. Popular opinion
leaders are identified, recruited, and trained
to serve as behavior change “endorsers”
within their community and sphere of influence, resulting
in a shift in the targeted attitudes and behaviors within that
community.
Green Dot 2012
The Power of Myths• She Fears You: Men Ending Rape.
• Findings:
• Lowered acceptance of rape myths.
• Increased understanding of what constitutes rape and sexual assault
• Rape myth acceptance remains the most common measure of program effectiveness (Gidycz et al., 2001).
• Rape prevention programs that demonstrate long-term impact on Rape Myth Acceptance have a greater chance of influencing behavior and preventing rape.
• Male participants with a greater understanding of rape are less likely to become unknowing perpetrators (Berkowitz, 2002; Koss et al., 1987). Female participants knowledgeable about definitions of rape who experience sexual assault are less likely to engage in self-blame and more likely seek support and resources as survivors. -- Dr. Keith Edwards
Best Practices On encouraging bystanders to
intervene...
"... (students) need to have an awareness of the problem and its negative impact on the victim.
They will be more likely to help if they are asked to make a
commitment to help and see themselves as partially
responsible for solving the problem. Finally, bystanders need to feel that they possess the skills
to intervene and have the opportunity to view individuals
who model such behaviors."

Bystander Theory
A Green Campus• Decades of
research by social psychologists documents basic principles of bystander behavior that have a broad impact on individual and group choices.
