Virginians have been growingcorn since the first settlers arrivedin the new world. NativeAmericans were the first to sharetheir secrets about growing corn, and ever since then, Virginianshave been improvingon it.

temperature, preventing theconversion of the corn’s sugarto starch.
Virginia’s yellow varieties ofsweet corn are the first ready forharvest in mid-summer, followedby several varieties of white andbi-color corn that enjoy a specialreputation for sweetness.
Varieties: Several hybrid varietiesof white corn and bi-color.
Pack Size: 41⁄2 to 5 doz. crates
Grade: U.S. Fancy, U.S. No. 1Trends: Fresh market sweet cornacreage will remain fairly steadyover the next few years.

Features and Benefits:The mature green tomato is
Virginia’s number one vegetablecash crop for several reasons. Forone, Virginia is a major productionarea for tomatoes, making suppliesreadily available throughout theeastern United States. Because ofVirginia’s access and proximity tomajor markets, transportationcosts of mature green tomatoes arelower and tomatoes arrive soonerand fresher.
Sandy, loamy soil and moder-ate climactic conditions inVirginia’s tomato-growing regionsprovide just the right combinationfor a high-quality tomato. Mostmature green tomatoes are ripenedunder controlled conditions using
natural ethylene gas. This givesbuyers the exact level of ripenessthey desire, and enables Virginiagrowers to ship mature greentomatoes throughout the easternUnited States and Canada.
In addition to the maturegreen, growers are producingmouthwatering vine ripes. Thepopularity of grape tomatoes isreflected in the increased acreageof this delicious addition to thetomato family. Cherry, plum, andgreenhouse/hydroponic tomatoesare also available in commercialquantities.
Varieties: Solar Set, Sun Pride,Mountain Spring, Mountain Pride,Sunbrite
Pack Size: 25 lbs. (extra large, large, medium and small)
Grade: U.S. Combination (or bet-ter), U.S. No. 2, U.S. No. 3
Trends:Mature green tomatoacreage has stabilized in recentyears but an increasing trend inacreage of vine ripe production hasdeveloped.
