Learning to lead is every bit as complex as learning to become a mature productive adult all over again.

Leadership TodayEvery age places demands on its leaders. What do you see as the issues of our particular day that leaders face as they seek to offer leadership – in every context?

Once upon a time we simply obeyed orders issued by our superiors, our leaders, our managers. Now we incline more to challenge them, emboldened to do so by the spread of democracy, by the rhetoric of empowerment, and by the practice of participation. The evidence of the decline in respect for authority is everywhere—and everywhere are leaders who labor to lead. The change is cultural, contextual. Norms are now such that followers demand more… and leaders succumb more often.

I wonder if sometime around 50 years ago a great mental tide began to sweep across the world. Before the tide, people saw themselves in certain fixed places in the social order. They accepted opinions from trusted authorities. As the tide swept through, they began to see themselves differently…

They felt they should express their own views, and these views deserve respect. They mentally bumped themselves up to first class and had a different set of expectations of how they should be treated.

Becoming a leader has become a mantra. The leadership industry has exploded in the last thirty or forty years---in part the result of the following trends: first the historical trajectory to weakened leaders, strengthened followers, and more complicated contexts; second, an acceleration of this shift.

For us the invitation is, “Learn to lead like Jesus!”

Leadership can happen anywhere at any time.  Leadership is not about personality; its about behavior.  Try, fail, learn. Try, fail, learn. Try, fail, learn. That is the leader’s mantra.

Leadership is not a gene and it’s not an inheritance. Leadership is an identifiable set of skills and abilities that are available to all of us. The “great person” – woman or man – theory of leadership is just plain wrong.

Then when he (Barnabas) arrived (in Antioch) and witnessed the grace of God, he rejoiced and began to encourage them all with resolute heart to remain true to the Lord; for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. Acts 9:23-24

When He had finished speaking, He (Jesus) said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.”

Luke 5:4-5

The leadership training industry, ignoring the trajectory of history, overvalues leaders and undervalues followers.
