1.
2. WE WILL ROCK YOU!: The first-place Dodgers continue their seven-
game homestand (3-2) with the third of four games against the Rockies.
The Dodgers are 6-1 against the Rockies this season and, dating to last
year, they have won nine of 10 games against Colorado overall and 10 of
their last 11 games against the club at Dodger Stadium. Following the
Rockies series, the Dodgers will head north for a three-game series against
the Giants at AT&T Park before returning to Los Angeles for a homestand
against the Padres (three games) and Braves (three games).
The Dodgers have the Majors’ second-best winning percentage
at .657 (23-12), behind only the Cardinals (.686, 24-11).
#WHIFF: Dodger pitchers combined to strike out 18 Rockies hitters last
night, tying the franchise record for the fifth time for most Ks in a nine-
inning game (also: April 13, 2012 vs. SD, June 4, 1990 vs. ATL, April 24,
1962 at CHC, Aug. 31, 1959 vs. SF). Los Angeles continues to lead the
National League with 321 strikeouts and also tops the Majors with a 3.61
strikeout-to-walk ratio (89 walks).
Clayton Kershaw posted the 31st double-digit strikeout game of
his career last night (10 Ks) and allowed three runs in 6.2
innings to become the 10th pitcher in Los Angeles history to
reach the 100-win milestone. At 27 years, 57 days, he became
the second-youngest active pitcher to reach the century mark in
career wins, behind only Felix Hernandez (27 years, 14 days on
April 22, 2013).
Kenley Jansen, who was reinstated from the disabled list
yesterday (fifth metatarsal surgery), made his 2015 debut last
night and struck out four in a scoreless eighth inning (Carlos
Gonzalez reached on a passed ball), as he recorded just the sixth
four-strikeout inning by a pitcher in Dodger history, joining Pete
Richert (April 12, 1962 vs. CIN), Don Drysdale (April 17,
1965 vs. PHI), Darren Dreifort (May 22, 2003 vs. COL), Brad
Penny (Sept. 23, 2006 vs. ARI) and Zack Greinke (July 25,
2014 at SF). Jansen has averaged 14.09 strikeouts per 9.0
innings (452 SO/288.2 IP) during the course of his career, the
third-highest all-time mark among pitchers with 250.0 or more
innings pitched.
Juan Nicasio picked up the first save of his career last night by
striking out the only two hitters he faced, after entering the game
with the tying runs on base. Nicasio has fired 10.1 scoreless
innings in his last seven games since April 25 to lower his ERA
to 1.02 and overall has limited opponents to a .145 batting
average with 25 strikeouts in 17.2 innings.
GETTING OFFENSIVE: The Dodgers continue to lead the Majors in
run differential (+63), home runs (54), walks (143), on-base percentage
(.355) and slugging percentage (.486), while topping the NL in runs (184)
and team batting average (.272). The Dodgers are on pace to set a
franchise record in slugging percentage and a Los Angeles record with
their best on-base percentage since 1955 (.356).
The Dodgers’ 54 home runs tie for the second most in franchise
history through 35 games, behind only the 2000 club (56):
Dodgers, Most HR thru First 35 Games – all-time
2000 56 (60 after 36th game)
2015 54
1961 54 (56 after 36th game)
The last time the Dodgers led the NL in home runs was 1983.
GLORY DAYS: This afternoon, some of the organization’s brightest
stars will return to the diamond for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Old-Timers
Game. Dodger greats Fernando Valenzuela, Orel Hershiser, Ron Cey,
Bill Russell, Davey Lopes, Rick Monday, Reggie Smith, Eric Karros
and Nomar Garciaparra are expected to suit up and the first 40,000 fans
in attendance will receive a replica 1965 World Series ring presented by
Security Benefit. In addition, players from the 1965 World Championship
team - Sandy Koufax, Tommy Davis, Maury Wills, Wally Moon, Ron
Perranoski, Wes Parker, Jeff Torborg, Ron Fairly, Al Ferrara and
Lou Johnson – will be saluted during the festivities.
MR. CONSISTENCY: Dodger starter Zack Greinke will take the hill
tonight looking to extend his perfect season (5-0) and continue the first
double-digit winning streak of his career. Greinke’s last loss was Aug. 9,
2014 vs. Milwaukee and since then, he’s gone 10-0 with a 1.94 ERA (21
ER/97.1 IP) in 15 starts. The right-hander is looking to become the first
Dodger to go 6-0 to start the season since Kazuhisa Ishii in 2002
Greinke has won each of his last four starts against the Rockies,
going 4-0 with a 2.10 ERA (6 ER/25.2 IP) since June 17, 2014,
and is 7-2 with a 3.57 ERA (34 ER/85.2 IP) in 15 career games
(14 starts) against the club. He has not lost to an NL West
opponent since the start of the 2014 season, posting a 16-0
record with a 1.79 ERA (26 ER/131.0 IP) in 20 starts in
divisional games in that span.
Tonight, Greinke will go for his eighth consecutive start of 6.0
or more innings and three or fewer runs allowed without a loss
to open the season, a feat only previously accomplished twice by
Los Angeles pitchers – Fernando Valenzuela in 1981 and Brad
Penny in 2007 (Source: Stats, LLC).
WHERE THE HEART (AND WINS) ARE: The Dodgers have gone
16-4 (.800) at home, the best mark in the Majors this season, and will need
to win the final two games of the Colorado series to keep their streak of 10
consecutive home series wins alive, which dates to last season. This is the
first time since moving to Los Angeles that the Dodgers have
accomplished this feat:
Dodgers, Longest Streak of Winning Home Series, Since 1900
