Warm up…

Arrange the following organisms to show who eats whom:– killer whale– cod fish– krill shrimp– algae– leopard seal

Warm up…continued

What might happen to the other organisms if algae were removed from this group?

What might happen if the killer whales were removed?

Are there any organisms in this group that eat more than one kind of food?

Energy Flow in Ecosystems

All organisms play a role in their ecosystem:

Producer (aka: Autotroph [self-feeder])– Make their own food (usually through

photosynthesis) Ex: plants (even the Venus Flytrap!)

All organisms play a role in their ecosystem:

Consumers (aka: Heterotrophs [different feeders])– Can’t make its own food– Gets energy from eating other organisms

1. Herbivores – eats plants

2. Carnivores – eats animals

3. Omnivores – eats plants & animals• Scavengers – eats dead plants & animals

All organisms play a role in their ecosystem:

Decomposers– Break down waste and dead organisms to return

raw materials to the environment Ex: bacteria, fungi, worms

A world with no decomposers?

Producer or Consumer?

Venus flytrap – producer

Fly - consumer

Producer or Consumer?

Consumer (herbivore)

Food Chains

Energy enters an ecosystem as…

SUNLIGHT!!!

Food Chain

Food chain – a diagram that shows how energy in food flows from one organism to another.

Order of the food chain:1. Sun – energy source2. Producer3. 1st Level (Primary) Consumer – eats producers (herbivore

or omnivore)4. 2nd Level (Secondary) Consumer – eats 1st level

consumers (carnivore or omnivore)5. Decomposer – recycles materials for use by producers

Arrows show the direction of the flow of energy!

Food webs

Most organisms do not eat the same thing every day, so they are part of more than one food chain.

Food web - a diagram that shows the feeding relationships between organisms in an ecosystem

Food Web

Food webs What happens if we remove an organism?

Summary

3 – What are the three roles that organisms play in an ecosystem. Describe each.

2 – What are two examples of a decomposer?

1 – Create a food chain that includes & ends with you.

Energy & Matter

Flow of energy

When an organism eats, it obtains energy, then uses a lot of energy in life process like growth and movement.

This means that only part of their energy is available to the next organism in the food web.

Energy Pyramid

Energy pyramid - a diagram that shows an ecosystem’s loss of energy

What is the purpose?– To show the amount of energy that moves from one

feeding level to another in a food web– Facts:

The greatest amount of energy is available at the producer level

The least amount of energy available to going to be a the top of the food chain.

Energy Pyramid Model

1. Follow my directions to make the pyramid.

2. The following information should be on each side of your pyramid:– Side 1: “Key” for an Energy Pyramid– Side 2: Food Chain with 3 levels of consumers– Side 3: Energy Pyramid for your Food Chain

Side 1: Key for an Energy PyramidLabel each level with the type of organism (producer, 1st level consumer, etc.) and amount of energy.
