CREATIVE WRITING
The Words of Tok DalangDemo Loni/Hi there,
Finally, the 2nd edition of WAYANG KULIT is here, and guess what came along with it? Spring! Okay, first thing first, thanks to the crew and writers, we manage to put together a fantastic spring edition of the magazine (I feel like crying). It takes time, sweat and a whole load of choco-late to finish this, and it really paid off, at least that’s what I think. Nothing much we can do right now, but to offer our big lump of gratitude to those involves directly and indirectly to make this issue works.
Have you ever wonder why the name of WAYANG KULIT was chosen to be our magazine brand? It’s all spontaneous and fuzzy. I remember the founding guys and girls were having our heated discussion on the perfect name for the magazine, many names were pitched into the brain storm-ing (like Carrot Juice, Karipap and even the combination of all of our names; yes, believe it) and the phrase WAYANG KULIT seems to have that kind of knack about it, that right feeling when you found the one. So the next thing that I knew the name was on the cover of the magazine. And the rest, they say is history.
Talking about history in relation to this issue’s theme (that would be Love and Peace), it seems society throughout time has learned many great deals about love and peace. So when it comes to this, I don’t have much to say actually, because deep inside we know all about it. Sure the forms it takes may be different in parts of the world, culture and society but the basics are still the same. It transcends the barriers of race, religion and geography and that what makes it (i can’t believe im saying this) beautiful. Like physic it does has equals like war and hate and so on. For certain funny reasons, we go to war to obtain peace, we learn to love the things that we hate and vice versa. It’s irony of how life tends to unfold. I’m not saying I know best, but hey it’s my opinion. Want to contradict what I write, do write it on “words” using font 12, make it 500-1000, turn that negativity into something constructive and send it to the official WAYANG KULIT email address: skin.film2011@gmail.com.
By the end of the day, the rest of the crew and me sincerely would like very much for our readers to enjoy flipping through our pages reading and talking about it. And feedbacks are most wel-come. On that bombshell, it’s time for you to turn to the next page.Thank you for reading WAYANG KULIT.
Best Wishes,
Elex Morpheous

Love for Knowledge Aiman Tugimin
Education is a gateway to the world of knowledge which is essentially impor-tant to every human. Knowledge is getting wider day by day and people are expected to participate in this rat race in drawing the benefit from it. Further-
more, globalisation is seen as a phenomenon which makes the world becomes smaller with the help of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Inter-net, for instance, has provided people with free access to all sorts of information which can be used as a tool for learning. In fact, it is a must for every house to own at least a desktop or laptop for the sake of having accessibility to the internet.
Nowadays, it is important for everybody to equip themselves with the knowl-edge of the world as it is one of the key elements for employability. In specific, the human resource department in every nation is expected to produce quality work force which can generate the coun-try, hence, double the amount of its revenue. In other words, knowledge and education is a ‘combo’ which will help people to survive in the sea of competition.
In addition, knowledge is a priceless asset owned by every person in this world. However, it is wrong to label that knowledge is only for ‘academia’ people. There is no scientific theory which says so and supports such notion. In fact, such opinions only viewed by those who are un-interested in earning. As a result, everybody is expected to learn and gain as much knowledge as possible because this will benefit them in future.
“In other words, knowledge and education is a ‘combo’ which will help people to survive in the sea of competition...”
Ignorance to Love Nandini Indiran
“Most religions warn against war, yet more wars have been fought over religion than perhaps anything else... War never stops; it only pauses.”
(Albom, 2009, p. 90)
The statement may be true, but we can do something about it. Most of us do have a religion whereas; there are also a significant number of athe-ists around. Now, let’s forget about war and talk about what is happening
around us. A group of black boys beat up a group of Muslim students in London. A gang of angry white guys assaulted some black boys in Portsmouth. Why? Due to skin colour? Or is it because the media keeps telling us that a certain group of people should NOT live in our society? I am not a Muslim, but often people think that I’m a Paki. Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? I heard a group of young children shouting things like “go back bitch!” “Go back to where you came from” “Paki b******s!” Where do they learn these things? Are their parents re-sponsible or do they grow up in a hostile environment?
I think the time has come to stop discriminating people because of their skin col-our, race, ethnicity, religion, or whatever you can think of. The world is changing now and you can find a Chinese who’s a Jew and an African who’s a Hindu. So, why breed hatred when it does not take us any further? I know it’s not easy to embrace all cultures when you have to deal with ethnocentrism-a belief that your ethnic group is superior. However, we should all try! I think the first step is to put religion aside and live by ‘having a little faith’. Many people often get that mixed up! You do not need a religion to have faith. I define faith as ‘having complete confidence’ and you can have faith in a religion, science or a parent. So, stop preaching and start loving each other. Take care!

The 18 Weapons of Chinese Martial Arts Yee Jing Cheng
Chinese martial arts training would not be complete without the use of weapons. This article is part 1 of a 3 part series which will attempt to give a brief description on the well known 18 weap-ons of Chinese martial arts (十八般兵器).
GUN
Gun (棍) is the Chinese equivalent of staff. It is considered as one of the four major Chinese weapons, along with the sabre, sword and spear. It is often considered as “the grandfather of
all weapons” as it represents the most primary form of human weaponry. The staff is often used in large, circular sweeping motions, as with the traditional saying “the staff sweeps around” (棍扫一大片).
Length of staff can vary from waist height, eyebrows height to overhead.
QIANGQiang (枪) is the Chinese abbreviation for spear. It is one of the four major Chinese weapons along with the staff, sabre, and sword, and is sometimes considered as “the king of all weapons.”The weapon is recognizable with its signature horse hair tassel at the base of its tip. The red coloured tassel is meant to blur the vision of the enemy as the weapon is swung around and also to absorb blood from the blade to prevent the staff from getting wet and sticky during combat.
In contrast with the staff, the spear is often wielded in a more straight-on fashion. Hence the saying “the spear pokes a straight line” (枪挑一条线)
In contrast with the staff, the spear is often wielded in a more straight-on fashion. Hence the saying “the spear pokes a straight line” (枪挑一条线)
The dao could also be dual-wielded, which would make it as shuang dao (双刀) or literally “double sabres”.
DAODao (刀) or sabre forms one of the four major Chinese weapons along with the spear, staff, and sword, and is often referred to as “the general of all weapons.” The dao is shorter in length and is used mainly for forceful slashing and thrusting attacks. Hence, it is often likened to a ferocious tiger – fast and aggressive, like an invincible warrior that walks through his/her opponent.
“Dao…is often likened to a ferocious tiger – fast and aggressive…”
JIAN
The Chinese long sword or Jian (剑) is uniquely recognizable with its thin and stream-lined shape. In contrast with the dao, it is mainly used for straight-lined thrusts and slices across weak spots on the body. In ancient times, the jian is a sign of elegance and gentlemen, scholars or government officials often carry it with them for decorative purposes. It is also the preferable weapon of protagonists in many Kung Fu novels and movies.
*Unlike the dao, the jian is comparable to a traveling dragon – like a wandering knight flowing through life and enjoying it.
*Unlike the dao, the jian is comparable to a traveling dragon – like a wandering knight flowing through life and enjoying it.
JI
Like any typical halberd, the Chinese halberd or Ji (戟) has two points of attack, which are the spear tip and the side blade; the spear tip is for thrusting and the side blade for slashing. The space between the side blade and the pole enables the wielder to hook onto enemy weapons, while the flat side of the blade could be used to knock opponents off their horses.
“…the spear tip is for thrusting and the side blade for
slashing.”
GOU
The hook sword or Gou (钩) is an exotic weapon commonly practiced in Northern Chinese mar-tial arts. In ancient times, it was exclusively a civilian weapon and had not appeared in official listings of Chinese weapons. Due to its exotic shape, it has various usages. The end of the hilt is sharpened like a dagger; the hook is used for slashing and hooking onto enemy weap-ons; the crescent guard for blocking and slashing; and the back which is used like any regular sword. The two swords could also be hooked onto each other and swung around like a whip, hence extend-ing the fighters’ reach.
WHAT MATTERS
Wait, turn back and think! Nandini Indiran
I think most youths today are losing themselves to either booze, drugs or the media’s trap. We live in a materialistic world where everyone wants to change something: their clothes, bags, cars, eating habits and even their nose! Can you believe it? Keeping up with the constant
changing of the world does not equate to losing your self-identity. I watched a video a couple of days ago which featured an Asian and Caribbean women trying to change their looks because they don’t ‘fit in’ to the society in which they live in. What does that mean? Both women have their own definition of ‘beauty’ and want to look more ‘European’ with white complexion and a ‘perfect’ nose. I felt sorry for both of them, I really did. They spent tonnes of money on beauty products just to look ‘better’. The black girl who lives in Essex feels that her nose is not ‘suitable’ because it does not go well with her dressing and feels pressured as all her friends have ‘perfect’ features. She was deceived by the media which perpetuates that Western looks are perfect and ideal. She went through a lot of pain during the plastic surgery and her mom was devastated to find out that her daughter was trying so hard to change her identity. This is a form of ‘de-racialisation’ and it is becom-ing serious in the UK nowadays. 3 out of 5 friends of mine wanted to change their looks: wider jawline, Caucasian nose and bleaching skin. So, my advice to all women (and men) out there is “please wait, turn back and think of the consequences before you do something that you might regret for the rest of your lives!”
Please take some time to view the video that inspired me to write this!

DOVEsMania miSSdoubleT
“. . . THE DOVE AND VERY BLESSED SPIRIT OF PEACE . . .” (Shakespeare, King Henry the Fourth, part 2)
We all know that dove is used as a universal symbol to represent peace. But how many of us are actually aware why the dove and not other animals are used? The reason for this can
be traced back in the Biblical days particularly the Bible’s Old Testament. In the Old Testament, God had unleashed heavy rain that the whole world became flooded. On board on the ark built by Noah, he, his family and the creatures and animals survived the flood. After being drifted for days, Noah sent off some of the birds that were with him on the ark in search of land. The Dove re-turned a few days later with an olive branch in its beak. This is to show Noah that there is a land nearby. Due to this incident, dove becomes a universal symbol of hope and later it became the recognized symbol of peace. This image then becomes synonymous to the word peace to many people for hundreds of years.
Apart from representing the meaning ‘peace’, the dove is also a Christian symbol which means ‘Rest in Peace’. This is due to an incident happened in the New Testament when Jesus’s parents sacrifice doves on his behalf after his circumcision. Later the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus at his baptism like a dove, and subsequently the dove became a common Christian symbol of the Holy Spirit. This is the reason why many tattoo wearers choose to have a dove tattoo on their bodies along with the name of someone close to them who has passed away.
In Islam, doves are respected and favoured birds among Muslims along with the pigeons. It believed that the doves have assisted the final prophet of Islam, Muhammad, in distracting his enemies outside the cave of Thaw’r in the great Hijra. In the Japanese culture, the doves are portrayed as the messenger of the Japanese angel of war.The symbol of a pair of doves is synonymous with everlasting love, prosperity, fidelity and a happy home life and this is why at many weddings doves are released by the bride and groom. Doves are known to have lifelong partners; they work in unison to build their nests and raise their young and are incredibly loyal to each other. The dove tattoo represents dif-ferent things for different people including:

February 14th, A day where every living couples celebrate their success of being together, A day where all Adams and Eves neglect their harsh reality, A day where twosome escape themselves to a masked fantasyA day when party animals end up with euphoric ecstasy.
February 14th,A day of nasty truths gone loose.A day of suffering relationship gone broken.A day of lustful girlfriend gone wild.A day of cheating husband... gone.
February 14th,A day individuals found out they are lonely.A day single aware they need a lover.A day the un-chosen ones curl up in the corner, degenerate themselves and cry like a baby

WHAT IF“What will you do if you go to the bank and discover that you have zero sum in your
account?”
Nandini
I would freak out!! You know what else I would do? Curse myself because I failed big time to save up!
Then, I would probably go through my previous bank statements to ensure that the bank isn’t try-ing to fool around with me.
I can’t think of anything else. Cheers!
Regards.
*editorial note: Haha don’t curse yourself, or else things will get worst. ^^
Yee Jin Cheng
Errrrrrr... maybe my best choice is to cry to my mom and dad for more money?
*Editorial note: …...
Ciel
Well, I’m definitely not gonna commit suicide...That won’t help me get my money back, will they? But hey, of course I’ll be feeling as if the world around me has ended....perhaps for a few days...weeks maybe..even months...or a year...After having done the normal procedures (report to the police, fill in forms at the bank, you name it..) maybe I’ll take up part-time jobs....cut down my expenses...just do whatever it takes to sur-vive... Life needs to go on...though it’s not as easy as it sounds...
*Editorial note: Haha that’s quite a “skema” one. Nevertheless, I like the maturity shown.
