SAT 3C/D/F Overview
SAT 3C/D/F General Specifications:
The SAT 3C/D/F controller is a drop-in replacement for the older SAT 2d or SAT 2c line of controllers that WattMasterControls Inc. manufactured from 1983 to 2006. The SAT 3C/D/F is an advanced product improvement over the older SAT 2c/dtype controller.The SAT 3C/D/F is a communication interface that converts/transfers data between the WCC III satellite based system and theWattMaster Controls series of standalone controllers that are referred to as TUC (Terminal Unit Controllers) or RTU (RoofTop Units.The SAT 3C provides the ability to communicate with up to 8 RTUs or TUC5Rs depending on the SAT 3C’s application softwarecode.The SAT 3D provides the ability to communicate with up to 32 TUC2Rs, VAVZ IIs, TUC5RXs or TUC5Rs depending on theSAT 3D’s application software code.The SAT 3F provides the ability to communicate with up to 16 TUC2Rs, VAVZ IIs, TUC5RXs or TUC5R depending on theSAT 3F’s application software code.
The SAT 3C/D/F features the following:Two RS-485 communication ports. The satellite communications port runs at 19.2K baud and is connected to other SAT 3 typedevices, while the TUC communication port runs at 9600 baud and connects between the SAT 3C/D/F interface and to theTUC or RTU type devices.
On the front cover of the SAT 3C/D/F controller, there are 8 LEDs for easier user troubleshooting diagnostics.There are two 8 position dipswitches that are also located on the cover of the SAT 3C/D/F controller. One dipswitch is asatellite address base switch, and the other is an option switch to select various different options on the SAT 3C/D/F controller.
The SAT III type interconnecting communications:It is a WattMaster Controls proprietary RS-485 based protocol, and it is based on packetized data in pre-defined parameterblocks. Troubleshooting of the SAT III RS-485 communication’s loop and the TUC RS-485 communication’s loop is possiblewith a Digital Volt Meter. (The older SAT II communications was based on Manchester encoded data, and was very reliable,but was hard to troubleshoot)
For the WCC III system. WattMaster Controls has developed a new isolated 485 communication bus that can support 239 SATIIIs on four separate communications channels (60 Satellite loads per channel) .A single channel can support up to 60 SAT III type loads on one communications loop. This is for redundant operation—if forsome unknown reason a WCC III communications channel loop goes down, it will not cause other SAT III type controllers onthe other loops to lose communications to the WCC III - MCD.

THE SAT 3C/D/F CONTROLLER PROGRAM UPDATES ARE AVAILABLE VIA A "FLASH" PROGRAMMING OR A DOWNLOADEDUPDATE. THE SAT 2C/D CONTROLLER SOFTWARE UPDATES HAD TO BE CHANGED OUT WITH A EPROM. THE SAT 3C/D/FCONTROLLER CAN BE CHANGED BY REMOTELY DOWNLOADING THE SOFTWARE OR BY "FLASHING" A NEW PROGRAMINTO THE SAT 3 D CONTROLLER'S MEMORY. The most common TUC2R application is what is called VAVBOX control, with a tri-state actuator used to modulate a damper for the temperatureZone. THE SAT 3C/D/F CONTROLLER HAS AN ADDITIONAL FOUR LEDS THAT DISPLAY THE STATUS OF THE RECEIVE AND TRANSMITFOR THE SAT LOOP RS-485 AND TUC LOOP RS-485 COMMUNICATIONS. IT DOES THIS FOR BOTH THE SAT III COMMUNICATIONSLOOP AND THE TUC PORT. IN ADDITION, THERE IS A SEPARATE LOCAL SET LED, AND THREE STATUS LEDS.THE SAT 2C/D CONTROLLER ONLY HAD AN LED THAT WAS A COMBINATION - POWER, COMMUNICATIONS, AND LOCAL SETINDICATOR FOR THE SATELLITE MANCHESTER COMMUNICATIONS LOOP.
SAT III - COMMUNICATIONSTHE SAT 3C/D/F CONTROLLER NOW USES RS-485 COMMUNICATIONS. THE SAT 2C/D CONTROLLER USED A TRANSFORMERCOUPLED MANCHESTER ENCODED PROTOCOL THAT WAS DIFFICULT TO TROUBLESHOOT. THE BEST BENEFIT OF HAVINGRS-485 COMMUNICATIONS IS THAT IT CAN BE TROUBLESHOT WITH A DIGITAL VOLTMETER.

Typical WCC III System Installation - Multiple buildings with fiber optics connecting the two buildings.
The WCC III - MCD is the data collection point for all of the WCC III information. It is also serves as the ethernet
connection point to the internet or building intranet. This WCC III - MCD must be on at all times for the WCC III system
to function.
The SAT III Controller is used for general purpose control and is provided with 8 analog inputs, 8 analog outputs, and
16 control outputs (each relay contact is rated 1.0 Amp @ 24 VAC). Up to two additional optional 8 input Binary Input
boards and three optional binary output boards (two in Binary Output Mode and One in V-Out mode - each relay contact
is rated 1.0 Amp @ 24 VAC) may also be connected to the SAT III Controller via an HSS connector that is located on
the side of the SAT III Controller. Electrically, this SAT III device only takes up "ONE" satellite load. There may be up
to 60 satellite loads per WCC3 satellite communications loop. An optional additional WCC3 M-COMM loop EXP
board is available that will provide an additional two WCC3 satellite communications loops if needed.
The SAT 3D controller is used to interface to terminal unit controllers (TUC type controllers), VAV boxes, heatpumps,
and even small Constant Volume AHU controllers. Each one of the SAT 3D controllers takes up 4 Satellite addresses
and then can communicate with up to 32 of these TUC type controllers. Only a limited amount of data points (4 Analogs
and 2 Binary) from the TUC type controllers can be addressable and then used within the WCC III system.
Electrically, this SAT 3D device only takes up "ONE" satellite load. There may be up to 60 satellite loads per WCC3
satellite communications loop. An optional additional WCC3 M-COMM loop EXP board is available that will provide
an additional two WCC3 satellite communications loops if needed.
The SAT 3F controller is used to interface to terminal unit controllers (TUC type controllers), VAV boxes, heat pumps,

15. SAT 3C/D/F INSTALLATIONTypical WCC III Installation
The SAT 3C controller is used to interface to dedicated Roof Top controller units (RTU-17 type controllers) and other
more specialized controllers (GPC type devices). Each one of the SAT 3C controllers takes up 8 Satellite addresses and
then can communicate with up to 8 special dedicated controllers. Electrically, this SAT 3C device only takes up "ONE"
satellite load. There may be up to 60 satellite loads per WCC3 satellite communications loop. An optional additional
WCC3 M-COMM loop EXP board is available that will provide an additional two WCC3 satellite communications
loops if needed.
The SAT 3P controller is used to measure up to 8 dry contact closures from up to 8 pulse meters, such as a Emon-Dmon
KWH meters. (Please note: Each SAT III controller can also interface to a single dry contact closure from a single pulse
meter on A1 input.) This SAT 3P controller is a stripped down SAT III controller with only 8 pulse type inputs. Besides
logging abilities, there are not any other functioning satellite features in this SAT 3P controller. Each one of the SAT 3P
controllers takes up 8 Satellite addresses. Electrically, this SAT 3P device only takes up "ONE" satellite load. There may
be up to 60 satellite loads per WCC3 satellite communications loop. An optional additional WCC3 M-COMM loop
EXP board is available that will provide an additional two WCC3 satellite communications loops if needed.
The WCC II to WCC III global bridge is a device that allows for data from the "old" WCC II system to be shared with a
"new" WCC III system. It was designed as a temporary solution while the WCC II system was being changed over to a
WCC III system. Electrically, this WCC II to WCC III Global Bridge device only takes up "ONE" satellite load. There
may be up to 60 satellite loads per WCC3 satellite communications loop. An optional additional WCC3 M-COMM
loop EXP board is available that will provide an additional two WCC3 satellite communications loops if needed.
The high speed cable \DSL modem is used to connect the WCC III - MCD to the internet. Alternate connections to the
internet, or even the building intranet is possible, but they will require additional IT support at the contractor level.

Globally Addressable Control Points
Globally Addressable Control PointsThe main differences between the different types of SAT 3C/D/F controllers primarily have to do with the amount of data from the various TUC/RTU type controllers that then can be globally addressed to a logical control point within the existing satellite data structure and then used within the WCC III system as a recognizable control point.
The SAT 3D controller can allow each TUC/VAVZ II controller to have up to 4 Analog logically addressable control point values and 2 Binary logically addressable control point values that can be globally used within the WCC III program. These address-able control points are “shoehorned” into the existing satellite data structure. As such, there can only be 32 TUC/VAVZ II type controllers connected via the TUC communications loop to the SAT 3D controller. Each one of the SAT 3D controllers takes up 4 physical satellite addresses.
The SAT 3F controller can allow each TUC/VAVZ II controller to have up to 8 Analog logically addressable control point values and 8 Binary logically addressable control point values that can be globally used within the WCC III program. These addressable control points are “shoehorned” into the existing satellite data structure. As such, there can only be 16 TUC/VAVZ II type control-lers connected via the TUC communications loop to the SAT 3F controller. Each one of the SAT 3F controllers takes up 4 physical satellite addresses.
The SAT 3C controller can allow each RTU/TUC controller to have up to 32 Analog logically addressable control point values and 48 Binary logically addressable control point values that can be globally used within the WCC III program. These addressable control points are “shoehorned” into the existing satellite data structure. As such, there can only be 8 RTU/TUC type controllers connected via the TUC communications loop to the SAT 3C controller. Each one of the SAT 3C controllers takes up 8 physical satellite addresses.

R & T & SHIELD (SAT COMMUNICATIONS CONNECTIONS)
Communications loop can be “home run" to a power and switchable comm board - WM part # PL102224. The use of a shielded twisted pairwire is required, such as WM part # WR-NL-WR-18 or WR-LL-WG-18. When connecting the communication wiring from satellite controllersto other satellite controllers, you must wire "R" to "R" and "T" to "T", and "SHIELD" to SHIELD". The shield connection for all of the WCC IIItype RS-485 communications loops is required for all WCC III devices, SAT III, SAT 3C/D/F, SAT 3P, TUCs, RTUs, and VAVZ II controllers.
R & T & SHIELD (TUC COMMUNICATIONS CONNECTIONS)This RS-485 TUC communications loop can be daisy chained from one TUC/RTU type controller to the next TUC/RTU type controller or the TUCcommunications loop can be "home run" to a power and switchable comm board - WM part # PL102224. The use of a shielded twisted pair wireis required, such as WM part # WR-LL-WG-18 or WR-NL-WR-18. When connecting the TUC communication's loop wiring from the satellitecontrollers (SAT 3C/D/F) to the first TUC/RTU device, you must wire "R" to "T" and "T" to "R" and "SHLD" to "SHLD".
