• Web 2.0 , a phrase associated with the O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004, refers to a perceived second-generation of Web-based services such as - social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies (collaborative tagging) - that emphasize online collaboration and sharing among users.

• What is Facebook?- A leading social networking site
- Can be utilized by libraries, individuals, businesses, non-profits, social groups etc.
- Developed in 2004, 845 million users (December 2011)
- Averages 483 million daily active users
- Available in 70 languages

Facebook• Features
o Creating a Facebook account is free. After completion of the sign up form, Facebook sends an email to the address you provided. Clicking on the confirmation link completes the sign up process.
o Profile/Timeline, Friends, Messages, News Feed are prominently featured on a member’s page.
o Use Facebook ‘Find Friends’ feature. Click on ‘Add Friend’ button. FB sends a request to that person. If request is confirmed they will show up on your friends list.
o Other Facebook applications - Photos, Notes, Groups, and Events.
o Third party applications on FB are designed to enhance members’ experience. Some applications are built by Facebook developers, but most applications are built by outside developers who use Facebook's APIs .
o ‘Apps and Games’ allows members to play social games, set reminders, share similar taste in books, movies, and music.

• What is Twitter?
- No. 1 social networking and microblogging service
- Allows users to create, send and read messages or posts known as tweets in 140 characters or less.
- Launched in 2006, on track for 500 million users (March 2012)

• Twitter offers many ways to post updates: from the native site using the ‘compose new tweet’ box, from your mobile phone, and from some third-party applications (APIs).

• The recommendation feature suggests ‘Twitterers’ for you to follow
• On Twitter page, you will find a record of the number of tweets you have posted since you joined the service, the number of persons you are following (i.e. you are receiving their Twitter updates) and the number of persons following you
• Retweet favorite posts to followers
• Users can add images and location information (local neighborhood or exact point when you tweet) directly on the service
• How Can I Use Twitter in My Library/Workplace?
– Current awareness service to keep clients informed about upcoming events, services offered.
– Most webinars and conferences now promote a Twitter hash tag to encourage virtual and on-site attendees to post information about presentations and give immediate feedback e.g. #CIL2012.
– Promote virtual reference service
