Standard Mastery: Writing 3

Due Date: Wednesday, September 19th, 2012 at the beginning of class.

Length: 1,000 words maximum (all pieces should range between 2-3 pages in length)

Scenario: A well-developed narrative is created when a writer exposes a reader to a problem, situation or observation. Kate Chopin, in “The Story of an Hour” does this by showing her audience a woman’s moment of illumination: she now has a freedom that she was once denied. Growing up, we’re faced with many obstacles to overcome, learning experiences and insights into the world. Pick one of these experiences and take the role of a writer trying to convey that experience to a waiting audience.

Your Task: Students will compose a narrative of a real or imagined experience unique to a protagonist(s). You may use Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” as inspiration and write the story of an hour that was particularly significant to you or to an imagined character.

Criteria for Mastery:

To demonstrate mastery in this task, students must:

Engage the reader by clearly presenting a problem, situation or observation the protagonist is experiencing

Utilize varied narrative techniques, i.e., description, dialogue, character development, etc. Use words and phrases to provide details, engage the senses, describe events and establish a

setting Provide a conclusion to the narrative that will provide closure and the opportunity for his/her

reader to reflect Follow the conventions of standard written English

For more details students may also refer to Writing Standard 3 on Narrative Writing.

Note: You will be turning in a first draft on Sept. 19th. Accompanying your draft should be a pre-writing exercise of some form to demonstrate that you completed both of the first two steps in the Writing Process.
