UNIT 3 STUDY GUIDE

Main topics (in orange on picture of word wall) Vocabulary – If you cannot define or think of ways to solve for these things, you

have a lot of reviewing to do. The list of vocabulary is only a very basic start to what you need to understand in order to start harder, more involved test questions.

Formulas 1. Speed = Distance/Time2. Velocity = Displacement/Time3. Acceleration = Velocity/Time4. Slope:

5. Area of a triangle = (1/2) x b x h6. Area of a square = b x h7. Force of gravity = Fg= (mass) x (constant for gravity)

Fg = m g*g = 9.8

8. Newton’s Second Law: Force = mass x acceleration F = m x a

9. Work= Force x distance x the angle of the force W=Fdcos(Ø)

*Units: Newton-meter (Nm) or Joule (J) 10. Work Energy Theorem: Motion from A to B:

Work = Final Kinetic Energy – Initial Kinetic EnergyW= KEf-KEi

W= ( ½ mvf2 – ½ mvi

2) 11. Potential Energy = (mass) x (gravity constant) x (height)

Ug = mgh

12. Triangle lengths with unknown sides

13. Voltage = Current x Resistance V = I x R

14. Electrical Force = (Coulomb’s Constant x The size of charge 1 x The size of charge 2) / distance of the charges squared

15. Wave formula for Energy

16. Wave formula for wavelength or frequency

Techniques to Solve problems1. Slope, Area, Line trend from graphs

2. Forces and Work Problems:a. Make a list of variables you know and don’t knowb. Draw pictures and free-body diagrams!!c. Determine Direction of Movementd. Use F=ma to solve for interested variables or Work Formula

3. What could change Work?a. Start with the formula W = F x db. Think what could reduce Force

*Look at free-body diagram!c. What could reduce distance

4. Interpret electron flow based on parts of circuit and their jobs

5. Right-Hand Rule

6. Start with understanding the parts of a wave.
