Australia is the 6th largest country in the world by area.7,692,024 km2

• Population: about 23 million people live in Australia

• Capital: Canberra, with 380,000 inhabitants (2013)

• Name: Commonwealth of Australia

• Government: Democracy

• Language: English

• Religion: mainly Christians

• Currency: 1 Australian Dollar=100cents

GovernmentWhile Australia still recognises the Queen of England as the

Head of State, we also have a Parliament. The Prime minister, the leader of the elected party, leads the country.

There are two houses; The house of Representatives and The Senate.

The house of representatives (150 members divided by population of states) is where the government debate national issues and make bills.

The Senate, (made up of equal senators from each state) can pass or deny a bill.

Indigenous PeopleThe native people of Australia are called Aboriginal Australians. They have lived in Australia for 40 000 years. They lived off the land, in tribes with similar cultures, languages and Dreaming stories.
