If: A company takes adverse action against you AND

you ask for your report within 60 days of receiving notice of the action.

You are unemployed and plan to look for a job within 60 days.

You are receiving public assistance. Your report is inaccurate because of fraud, including

identity theft.

It is best to follow up any verbal error inquiry with a written letter. The credit bureau has 30 days to investigate and respond to you.

In reviewing your credit report, you may detect identity theft earlier.

Identity theft is when someone steals your personal information – name, SSN, or credit card number

And uses it to:– Open a new credit card account – Write checks in your name

The unpaid credit card bills or bad checks can damage your credit history.

If you suspect identity theft, you should take immediate action and keep a record of your conversations and correspondence.

You should…. Call the toll-free number at any one of the 3 credit

bureaus and place a fraud alert – you only have to call one to have an alert on all 3.

Contact the lender and close any accounts that have been tampered with or opened fraudulently.

File a report with your local police. File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

Tips….– Don’t send your SSN information in emails.– Don’t carry your SSN in your purse or wallet.– Keep all your credit tools in a safe place – credit

cards, debit cards, checks, account statements.– Shred any documents that contain financial

information if you no longer need them.– To correct an error on your credit report, work

directly with the credit bureau and your lenders.

Interview several agencies Before signing any agreements

Ask questions regarding services, fees, and repayment plans.

Check with the State Attorney General , Better Business Bureau, and local consumer protection agency to find out if complaints have been filed.

Before Week 4: Go to one of the credit bureau websites and get a free credit

report. Review your report for accuracy. Identify any corrections you need to make and contact the

credit bureau. Does there appear to be any loans on your report that you

were unaware of? If yes, Take action, Contact the bureau now. Look around your home and office and assess the protection

of your financial data. Are there any positive changes you can make?
