4’cing the Future with 21st Century Instruction

Our Objectives - As Educators

We will explore what coding is and why we should teach coding in our schools.

We will learn/review ways to incorporate coding into our classrooms both with and without technology.

We will practice some simple coding skills, use coding tools, and extend coding concepts into other STEM related topics.

CHAMPS for our Presentation⦿ Conversation

● Please keep side conversations to a whisper. If you have to take a call, step out into hallway.

⦿ Help● Questions are strongly encourage. Feel free anytime to stop and ask a

question or give a comment. Just give me a signal.⦿ Activity

● We will about coding and why it is important to teach to our students!⦿ Movement

● You are welcome to stay seated or get up and move. Restrooms are close by in the hallway.

⦿ Participation● We will have a presentation and then time to interact with coding items.

⦿ Success● You will leave here with a few ideas of how to practice computer programing

and coding skills to challenge your students.

“It encourages a 21st century learning environment where students not only have the curiosity to wonder why, but the motivation to discover how.”

Today’s S.T.E.M. focus will be on Coding in the area of Computer Science.

Coding is giving one or more commands or algorithm(s) designed to be carried out by a computer.

"Simply put, code is a tool that lets you write your story with technology.”

4 C’ING The Future

The 4 C’s● Critical Thinking● Collaboration● Communication● Creativity

Why the Four Cs?When creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking are combined with coding, we end up with a style of learning that resonates with students.

Let’s learn the foundations of coding using the 4 C’s.

Why Code?

The ability to write computer software—to code—is an important skill.

Code is one of the world’s most used languages.

Coding teaches them growth mindset – added in is a little grit and resiliency.

It moves people from being consumers of technology to creators of it!

Everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer…

…because it teaches you how to think.

In fifteen years we’ll be teaching programming just like reading and writing. We’ll be looking back and wondering why we didn’t do it sooner.

Every girl deserves to take part in creating the technology that will change our world, and change who runs it.

Is Coding Supported by Standards?Kansas Curricular Content Standards for Library/Information and TechnologyInformation Format: recognize and distinguish uses and limits of products developed through various creative processes• Students use appropriate technology tools and other resources to

organize information. • G5.5.3. use online tools and organize information in a visual way that

is appropriate for the assignment or project

AASL, NGSS, ISTE’s – A great educator can link a standard to what they want to teach!

Programming is not specifically mentioned in the CCSS, but still serves to fulfill a number of requirements.

A Program is a list of instructions you create to tell a computer what to do.

Big Idea #1

http://www.familycodenight.org/

A Repeat Loop repeats any block or blocks you put inside it, as many times as you say.

Big Idea #2

http://www.familycodenight.org/

Use as few blocks as possible to solve the puzzle (just 5 blocks for this puzzle).

Big Idea #3

http://www.familycodenight.org/

If your code doesn’t work, no problem. Find out why, and fix it! It’s called “debugging”

Big Idea #4

http://www.familycodenight.org/

An “if-then” statement in your code. Conditionals let your code see and react.

Big Idea #5

http://www.familycodenight.org/

An “if-else” statement makes conditionals smarter: if one thing, do this; if not, do something else.
