Welcome to AP Environmental Science!

Who Takes 9th Grade APES?• This course is designed for the high

achieving student. • Students are expected to have a

working knowledge of life science prior to the start of the course.

• Students most likely will have been enrolled in accelerated physical science for high school credit and Algebra I.

• The AP course follows the curriculum standards as prescribed by the College Board.

• Students will not need to complete a summer assignment prior to the beginning of school.

• Students are expected to spend 30-60 minutes per day outside of class reading, studying, or working on lab assignments.

What is AP Environmental Science?• content is presented at the college level• students are consistently self-motivated,

excellent time-managers, seekers of excellence in personal performance, and go beyond what is typically expected

• instruction is heavily inquiry based at a rapid pace comparable to college

• continual integration of math in labs • students are very motivated to complete work

outside of the classroom• parents provide a strong, visible support system

for the student

What is AP Environmental Science?

An interdisciplinary study that integrates information and ideas from natural science:

Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science

And social sciences:

Economics, Politics, Ethics

THE FOUR Goals-scientific principles, concepts & methodologies to understand interrelationships of the natural world

- to identify & analyze environmental problems

- to evaluate relative risks

- to examine alternative solutions

- Cultural context of environmental problems

WHY TAKE AP Environmental Science?In May, all students have the opportunity to take a national exam to potentially earn college credit.

Cost: 1st exam - $10, each additional $92

Attendance and Make Up Work

Students should check with me and ask their classmates.

Ask me if there are any questions

I am available most days after school.

Students have 5 days to complete work after being absent. Sooner is always better.

Late Work PolicyLate work is accepted.

Penalty is 10% per day late.

No credit after 5 days late

Intervention and Re-testYou may retest on 1 test each semester, but you must remediate before the retest.

You may attend intervention/remediation for any unit.

I am available for help after school most days.

Should I Expect Homework Daily?

-This is an AP class, you must spend at least 30-45 minutes nightly reviewing, reading, and working on assignments.

-On-going homework is reading the chapter and working on the chapter study guides.
