Last Week’s Meeting Turning Cash Into Change

(from cover of The Rotarian)

When mail arrives from Rotary International I typically put it into the pile of mail to be read as opposed to the pile to shred. The other day my copy of The Rotarian magazine arrived as did an envelope with The Rotary emblem prominently displayed. Naturally those items were placed in the “to be read” file. The “to shred” pile contained requests from charitable organizations requesting monthly donations to feed people, ani-mals, birds, trees and just about everything else you can imagine. There were almost as many “pre-approved” credit card notices for about a bazillion dollars. Was I ever surprised and dismayed to open the official looking Rotary envelope only to find yet another credit card application. I can understand Rotary International’s desire to generate funds for worthy causes around the world. However, I object to them selling my name and contact info to banks and other marketing enterprises. I have a book published in 1999 entitled The Coming Charitable Revolution by Dr. J.T. Houck. It has contact information for charities to access different organizations in their effort to raise funds a multitude of projects. It covers the topic of compensation for Financial Professionals. That sparked my curiosity. It would be interesting to know the various financial considerations involved with the myriad Rotary programs. I have visited Rotary Headquarters in Evanston, and I was favorably impressed with the facility and staff. That was the era “before Bill Gates.” It would be interesting to visit again and see how much actually gets to the intended project. This is unverified; recently I heard that the Directors were flown from all over the place to select a chair for one of the executives. Go figure …. Rick Zander

Last Week’s Meeting Last week we had the pleasure of having our very own Darryl Keys as our speaking. Darryl enlight-ened us to the dangers of the cyber wild west and explained how the ‘clouds’ can provide us with a safe guard against the phishers of email. Great job Darryl! I am curious how many people went home and changed their passwords? Tom Fisher was the lucky recipient of the 50/50, do not spend it all in one place Tom!

President’s Message Recently I read a series of articles about water. Of all the water in the world, and there’s a lot of it, only 0.7% is available to grow food. At an R.I. convention, many years ago Jean-Michel Cousteau was a featured speaker. He may have been in Melbourne, Australia. He said it would be very dif-ficult to dip a bucket of water anywhere, in any ocean, that would not find particles of styrofoam. The situation is not getting better. According to a 2015 report, about eight million tons of plas-tic enter the oceans every year. Oceans are big, but wonder how much contamination can they stand? Can that water we used for agriculture? Can we drink it? A typical family in the U.S. may use 250 gallons of water a day. In many parts of the world, a typical family must sustain itself on about 15 gallons. Often the water is not what we would con-sider drinkable. While I normally drink tap water, there are many who prefer it bottled. In this country, we are very fortunate to have access to clean water every hour of every day. When a GSE Team visited from District 3040 in India, in 2009, every member expressed surprise that we had water 24 hours a day. Yes, water piped to our homes, all day and all night! The team leader told me water was not a problem for his family because, in addition to the on again, off again, public utility, his home had a well. He also expressed his disapproval of our swimming pool; a terrible waste of water.

Invocation Dear God of us all, As Rotarians, we may have times of sadness. We may have times of agony. Let us put our lives in perspective. Keep us in mind of a larger purpose. Help us focus on our contribution to humanity. Make us strong. Amen

Nils Weibull will be presenting on the Water Sanitation Project they will be doing in Ocoto Alto, Peru.
