Welcome to Mrs. Kirkman’s Classroom

Classroom Procedures and Guidelines

Where am I supposed to sit?

Find your name on a desk. This is your

assigned seat. Typically you will stay in the

same seat for about 6 weeks.

Who is Mrs. Kirkman as a person?

•A wife – my husband’s name is Jay and we’ve been married 16 years

•A mother – I have a 7 ½ yr old son named Benjamin – he is a second grader @ Colfax

•College Graduate – UNCG! Go Spartans!

•Carolina Tarheel fan!!!!

Who is Mrs. Kirkman as a person?

•A teacher – this is my 22ndyear of teaching. I have taught K-5 at many different schools and worked as a facilitator for 3 years. This is my 7th year at NWMS…and I love it!!!!

•A lifelong learner – I am involved in several national, state and county initiatives to impact math instruction

•National Board Certified Teacher Class of 2008!

What will Mrs. Kirkman expect from me?

•To treat your classmates and teachers with respect

•To come to class prepared …this means materials, homework, and an attitude of being ready to learn

•To give your best at all times

•To follow Viking Expectations and Class Do’s and Don’ts at all times

What are the rules in this classroom?

What ARE the classroom guidelines?

Guideline #1

Be in your assigned seat and have “Give me 3” completed by

the time the timer elapses.

Guideline #2

Bring ALL assigned books and materials to class and take them

with you when you leave.

Guideline #3

Follow directions the FIRST time they are given…no

warnings!

Guideline #4

Treat each person in this room with respect and dignity.

Guideline #5

Follow all procedures and policies as outlined in the

NWMS student handbook/planner.

Guideline #6

Control your Notebook!

Maintain a neat and organized math notebook. All papers will be given a “home” and should

remain there until directed. No papers should be loose.

Following Guidelines will result in:

•Verbal acknowledgement

•Viking Pride Tickets

•Scholar Dollars!

•A stress free learning environment.

•A pleasant and orderly classroom atmosphere.

Not Following Guidelines will result in:

1. Loss of Scholar Dollars

2. Warning and documentation

3. Silent Lunch

4. Team Conference

5. Parental Contact/Conference

6. Office Referral

Severe Clause

Any student who uses profanity, fights, damages school property (this includes the property of the teacher and other students) or is disrespectful (as defined by the teacher ) will be sent to the office

IMMEDIATELY.

Classroom Procedures

Entering the room

• Enter silently, after previous class has left

• Have a seat

• Follow Give Me 3 procedures

When you are tardy

• Enter quietly

• Place tardy slip in the red basket behind my desk

• Have a seat and take out your materials

Getting your attentionI will:

1. Raise my hand / ring bell / or use signal words

2. Wait for everyone to put down their pencils, become silent and look at me

3. Begin speaking

Paper Heading

• Upper right hand corner

• Place on all assignmentsName

Math 1 / 2 or 3

Assignment

After an absence

•Go to my planner to review assignments

•Copy homework into planner

•Retrieve any needed handouts from red pocket chart**Always remember that homework is posted daily on my

website!!

Finished Classwork Early … What do I do next?

What do I do next? Activities

•Work on unfinished math assignments

•Play 24 Challenge – either solo or with another “finished” classmate

•Work on “4 Fours Challenge”

•Work on a “Stumped” problem

•Start working on homework

Leaving Early•Please let me know as you enter the classroom – show me your signed early dismissal note.

•Pack your materials and leave quietly at the scheduled time. Be sure to get homework BEFORE you leave!

• If it is an emergency, quickly get my attention and I will assist you.

Turning in papers

•Make sure your heading is on paper

•Pass your paper to the assigned person

•If/when you receive a paper, place yours on top in the same direction and continue passing the stack as directed

Classroom Discussions•PLEASE participate but do not blurt out.

• I want to hear what you have to say.

•Make all questions and comments relevant to the current discussion.

• If your question is off the topic, write it down and ask me later.

Moving around the room•Use posted “finger rules”

•Do not ask to go to the restroom OR sharpen pencils during class instruction / discussion unless it is an emergency!

Brain Breaks•Will occur when I see we need them

•Must start and stop as directed – minimum transition time

•Everyone participates!!

•I love new ideas, so if you have one you would like to share…DO!

Snack Time•Take out and eat snack during warm-up in Core 3. (Finished by 2:30)

•Make sure all trash is placed in garbage can.

•Be sure that your desk area (top and floor) is left clean.

•No candy or cookie type snack will be allowed.

Assignments/ Planners•Homework is expected to be recorded daily in planner exactly as it is given in class.

• I will periodically, and without warning, have planner checks to make sure that all assignments are being recorded.

Class Dismissal•The teacher dismisses you, not the bell or the clock.

•Do not start packing up prior to me dismissing you.

•Wait until the teacher finishes and officially dismisses you with: “Have a nice day.”

Remember…I truly believe in your potential and I want you to believe in it

too!! Together we can do anything!
