Learn for Life

“Let us prepare every child for the test of life, and not just a life of tests”

PM Lee, National Day Rally 2012

Preparing Students To Excel Beyond Exams

• Have more time and space to deepen their learning, especially in the transition years (i.e. P3, P5, S1 and S3).

• Better enjoy the process of learning and develop dispositions for lifelong learning.

These changes aim to help our students:

At RSS, we prepare our students for life.

Apart from classroom teaching & learning:

• Learning for Life Programme (LLP) - Every RSS StudentA Leader

• Applied Learning Programme (ALP) - Tinkers toThinkers (T2T) Programme

• SAP Flagship Programme - 文化育苗,花开卍慈

We hope to enrich the learning experiences of ourstudents, deepening their acquisition of the 21st centurycompetencies as well as practise being a 小朋友,小先生 & 小主人.

School Qualities & Values

At RSS, we want our children to be: • Independent Learners• Effective Communicators• Active Citizens• Reflective Leaders

Our Mission

Addressing Parents and Stakeholders’

Concerns

• Even with the removal examinations for some levels, teachers will continue to assess their students.

• Parents will be kept informed of the child's progress.

How will I know about my child’s progress?

• Even with the removal of examinations for some levels, the number of examinations to assess learning is still adequate.

Will my child be ready for national examinations?

How will my child’s academic progress be measured if there are completely no

examinations and weighted assessments at P1 and P2?

• Current practices to gather information about students’ learning through checkpoints (e.g. class discussions, in-class work, homework, and bite-sized tests) will continue.

• The change is that these checkpoints will no longer count towards an overall result.

• Use of qualitative descriptors instead of marks and grades to report students’ learning progress in the report book (Holistic Development Profile).

Holistic Development Profile

(HDP)

This report card is to update you on how your child has developed in both academic and non-academic areas, and how you can work with teachers to support your child in his growth.

Parent Teacher Meeting

How will we allocate classes for Primary 3?

When progressing to P3, students will no longer be assigned classes based solely on academic ability.

P2 to P3Movement

o Reallocation of classes 30 (in P2) to 40 (in P3)

o Not streamed or bandedmixed abilities in each

o Balanced mix of students Gender Learning & behavioural needs

How will my child be selected for Edusave Academic Awards?

• The revised eligibility criteria considers positive learning dispositions (e.g., diligence, curiosity, collaboration and enthusiasm), instead of academic performance.

• Edusave Merit Bursary: P1 and P2 students who display positive learning dispositions consistently.

• Good Progress Award: P2 and P3 students who have made significant improvement in learning dispositions.

Partnering Parents

• Support and partnership of parents are crucial in realising these changes.

• Parents can play a part to encourage Joy of Learning, and Learn for Life.

Encourage Joy of Learning by

• not over-emphasising academic performance

• focus on your child’s learning journey, rather than compare them to others

Give our children the time and space to deepen learning.

Communication

At RSS, parents are welcome to keep the communication channel active. We communicate with parents via:• Student Handbook (most encouraged)• School Website• Emails • Phone calls • Smart Notification Acknowledgement Console (SNAC)• Letters to parents• SMS system • RSS Link (Newsletters)• Parents’ Conferences• Parents-Teacher Meeting

31

• First point of contact – Form Teachers through emails / phone calls / messages / meetings

• School-related matters – School is still the best point of contact

• Keep posted of school matters and updates through our Smart Notification Acknowledgement Console (SNAC) or letters / circulars sent out
