Library Guidelines- Library is a Safe and Happy Place

• Take Care of Yourself– Listen Carefully– Follow Directions

• Take Care of Others– Work and Browse Quietly. Do not disturb

others who are working.– Respect Others. Be kind with your words

and actions.

– Respect School and Personal Property– Clean Up After Yourself! – Use Shelf Markers– Push In Chairs– Return Books On Time (so others can enjoy

them )

All School Rules Apply to the Library. • If you do not respect the library and do not

following library rules, you will lose your library privileges.

Clean up after yourself!

• We have provided small trash cans around the library. Please throw your paper away in these cans.

Check-Out Procedures• You must have your library card to check-

out!• 3 items at one time. • Books and Playaways are checked out for 2

weeks. (Books be renewed.) We will talk more about Playaways later.

• Magazines are checked out for 1 week. (Can NOT be renewed. Only 1 at a time.)

• All items must be checked out before leaving the library.

• You cannot check out if you have an item overdue.

Renewals• To renew a book, you are re-

checking the book out. You can only renew BOOKS. Magazines and Playaways cannot be renewed. To renew your book, bring it to the circulation desk and tell us you would like to renew.

• If you decide against a book, place it on this cart and we will put it back where it goes.

Tour Time!

Popular Book Series• When you enter the library doors, you will see books in plastic

bins to your right and magazines and books to your left. The books in the colorful bins are popular series book.

• Examples: “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and “Dear Dumb Diaries”• The spine label of a “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” book will look like • this.

Series in Destiny Quest

When you search for Diary of a Wimpy Kid in Destiny (how we search for books found in the library using the computers), it will look like this:

On the left, you will see our Magazine, Spanish, and Graphic Novels Sections.

The Spanish Section contains books written in Spanish.

When you search for “Smile” in Destiny it will look like this:

Circulation Desk• What do you do at the Circulation

Desk: – Turn In Materials– Check-Out Materials– Ask for Help

Circulation Desk• The first thing you do when coming to the

library is turn in your books! The book return is located on the front of the circulation desk.

• If you do not put them in the return box, we do not know to check them in!

Graphic Novel Section, you will find the Reference Section.

– These books are to be used in the library only. They cannot be checked out.

Everybody Section• Located on the left side

When you search for “Dr. Seuss” in Destiny it will look like this:

Library Sections- Fiction

• Located along the left, back and right side walls.– The Fiction section has paper lanterns hanging above them!

• Call Numbers- Top Line is “F”• Alphabetical Order by Authors LAST Name

Here is a picture of the spine of “The Graveyard Book”

“F” tells you that it is found in the Fiction Section

“GAI” (the first three letters of the Author’s Last Name) tells you to go to the G’s in the Fiction Section.

Look for this “G” on the top of the bookshelves to quickly find your book!

Fiction Books in Destiny Quest

When you search for “The Graveyard Book” in Destiny it will look like this:

Biographies• Located on the right side

walls at the end of fiction.– Pictures of Famous Celebrities

are on the wall in the Biography Section!

• Biographies are TRUE stories about Real People!

• Call Numbers- Top Line is a “B”

• Alphabetical Order by Person’s Last Name

Tells you to go to Biography

Tells you the last name of who the story is about. Go to “D”s in Biography Section to find the book!

Non-Fiction Section• TRUE, FACTUAL BOOKS• Located on the short

bookshelves in the middle of the back half of the library. • Call Numbers-

– Top Line is a Number– Bottom Line is first 3 letters of the Author’s Last Name

• Numerical Order – 001-999.99– By Dewey Decimal System

Numbers tell you to go to NON FICTION

You will go to the non fiction section and look for the 700’s using the shelf markings located throughout the Non-Fiction Section

Playaways

• Pre-loaded Audiobook. You do not need an additional device to listen to a Playaway.

• Checked out with device, earbuds, earbud covers, lanyard, battery, and book.

• Must have a Playaway Permission Slip Signed in order to check out. Playaway permission slips must be signed each school year.

How Do I Search for Books? • Go to the library computers. Destiny (the

library’s search page) should already be up. If it is not, click on the desktop.

• Type what you are looking for in the search box. It can be a title, author, genre, subject, etc.

• Write down the call number BEFORE leaving the computers to search for book. Paper and pencils are located in the small buckets between each computer.

Genre ChallengeWhat do you do? Read one book each month from the

library’s “Genre of the Month”. Then decorate a genre ribbon to be placed in the library after you have finished the book.

What do you get? • Each Month: Sticker on your class Genre Chart• 3 Months of Participation: Picture on the Genre Wall and a

Bookmark• 6 Months of Participation: Free Book from Mrs. King’s

Book Collection• 8 Months of Participation: Special party for all of those

who have participated in the Genre Challenge each month.Class with the most participation get a Popsicle Party!

Genre of the Month will be announced on the morning announcements and posted in the library,.

Muffins with Mrs. King• The first Tuesday of each month, you can

come enjoy muffins with Mrs. King and other students. During this time, I will have books set up at each table. You will have 1 minutes with each book to see if it is something that you would like to read.

• 7:15-7:35 a.m.• Must have an Early Morning Pass to get

through the halls! You can get this from me or your teacher.

Book Talk Tuesdays• Want a chance to be on the morning

announcements? It’s easy! • Read a book. • Fill out a Book Talk Tuesday form

located at the Check-Out Desk. • Turn it back in to a library worker. • I will select one student each week

and call you to the library for filming.

• Open each school day from 7:15 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

• You must have a before school pass from your teacher to come to the library from 7:15-7:35 a.m.

• During school, use your library card as your library pass. You MUST have your library card to check out!
