Aims of the talk:

• To understand what phonics is and how we teach it in school

• To share reading and phonic strategies you can use at home to improve reading skills.

How much support shall I give my child when reading a word? What if my child does not know the sounds in a word?

At the front of reading record we will keep a diary of what children are learning in phonics.

Sounds they have been taught will be highlighted off.

Please note: When children are taught a new sound we ensure they are able to apply that sound confidently to reading and writing.

How will I know what sounds my child knows?

Introduce new sound

Revisit all previously learned sounds

How we teach phonics:

Ensure children recognise the letters that make that sound.

Read words with previously learnt sounds and the new sound.six

Write words with previously learnt sounds and the new sound.

Play the high frequency word games.

Practise saying bouncy and stretchy sounds with flashcards provided. (New sound flashcards will be given as children are taught the new sounds in school).

Read with your child each day for 10 minutes. Use the phonics home/ school sheet in reading records.
