EntourageQuestion
Inyourexperience
hastherelationship
betweenagencies
andprocurement
improvedoverthe
lastfewyears?
TinaAnswer
AgenciesaregettingbetteratknowingwhatProcurementwants,andProcurementgenerallyacceptsitneedstoknowmoreabouteachofthemarketingcategoriesitisbuying.Agoodrelationshipiswhereallthreeparties-Marketing,Procurementandtheagency-areopen,andcommunicateregularly.Iamafanof6monthly360degreeclientrelationshipsauditssoeveryoneisalwaysclearonwheretheystand.Inmyexperience,MarketingcanoftenplaythegameofhidingbehindProcurementasthebadguys.”

EntourageQuestion
Whatdoyou
thinkarethekey
factorsbehindthis
improvement?
TinaAnswer
AgenciesaretakingtimetolearnmoreaboutProcurement-IofferprocurementandnegotiationtrainingandIknowmanyothersdo,includingtheindustrytradebodiesandthisisgreattosee.Butwhileorganisationsdoinvestingeneralprocurementtraining,Ithinktheycoulddomoretocoverthespecificcategoriesinmarketingprocurement.It’savastarea-media,advertising,directmarketing,pressrelations,print,digital,experientialandsoon.Noonebuyercancoverallofthisaseffectivelyassomeonewhocanfocusononlyonecategory.”

EntourageQuestion
Howcanagencies
makeyourlife
easier?
TinaAnswer
IfProcurementhasaskedyoutocompleteatemplateinacertainway,pleasedoso.Thereasoniswehavetoensureconsistencyinouranalysis.
‘Butit’snotjustthat,thereareotherthingsyoucando.YoucanhelpeducateProcurementsotheyunderstandwhatyoudobetter.Orsharebestpracticereportingormanagementinformationaroundclientteams,haveaProcurementtoolkitofbestpracticessoyoucandealwithprocurementclientsinthesameuniformway.Andstandupforyourselves,don’tfeelbullied.Procurementrespectsthat.”

TinaAnswer
1. Procurement-friendlyagenciesthatunderstandandacceptourrole.
2. Flexibilitywhendiscussingscopeofwork,ratesandwaysofworking.
3. Someonewhoisproactiveandtransparent-ifyou’vedoneavolumebased12-monthdealwithaprintsupplierorapost-productionhouse,comeandtellme!(Noonehaseverdonethatbythewaybutitwouldhavesuchanimpactontheon-goingtrustintherelationship)

TinaAnswer
OverallIpreferredtobeapproachedbyemail.IalwaysrespondandthenImayarrangeameetingtocomeinandseeyourcredentials.Idon’tmindphonebutofcourseifI’minmeetingsitmaytaketimetorespond.AtleastbyemailIcankeeparecordofyou.IfwedomeetpleaseprepareyourcredentialssothatIcanclearlyseetheROIfromyourcampaigns.Itjustsometimesfeelsthatthepresentationhasn’tbeenpreparedwithmyroleinmind.Notthatthecreativesideisn’timportantbutthereneedstobeabalance.
AsmentionedI’malsoveryactiveontwitterandopentoreceivingthoughtleadershipyouthinkisrelevantformeoraninvitetoaseminar.”

TinaAnswer
Twitterfeedsaregreattoseewhatpeopleareupto.I’dsuggestgettingyoursocialmediafeedsortedout.Procurementfolkdotheirresearch,soareallypoororweirdTwitterorsocialmediainteractioncandamageyou-Iknowit’ssupposedtobeabitoffun,buttherehastobesomethingworthwhilebusiness-wiseotherwisethere’snocredibility.SeeWiedenandKennedy’s(W2Optimism).Theydon’ttakeitinturnsforthegradstobeinthetweetseat,theMDdoesit.I’mnotsayingthatthisisalwayspossiblebutjustdon’tgetthemostjuniorpersonbecausenobodyelsewantstodoit…

Invitestoseminarsandbreakfastsorthoughtpiecesaregreataswell,wedon’toftengetinvitedbutitwouldhelpusunderstandalot.
FinallyifIgetbackintouchwithyouberesponsive!IfIemailorcall,Idon’twanttowaitfourdays-theopportunitymayhavegone.”

“WellIthinkitwillbecomemoreglobal,andintimepotentiallybecomemoreofadecisionmakerthanMarketing.
AlthoughI’maconsultantmyself,I’dliketoseeProcurementdepartmentsdeveloptheirin-houseknowledgebase.Icanthinkwecanusetoomanyoutsideconsultants–media,auditing,production,processreengineering,agencysearchandselection,relationshipmanagementetc.Theyallhaveaparttoplaybutlet’snotlosetheknowledge…

‘Ialsothinktherewillbemorestandardisationoftemplatesthough-suchascontracts,servicelevelagreements,feestructures-butperhapsmorecreativitywiththingslikeperformance-relatedfees,acrossallcategoriesofmarketing.”
