What’s it like working at Marquee Sydney?

Imagine this...

This is ROI...

We sat down with him and asked what his experience has been so far working at one of Sydney’s premier nightclubs

Having been at Marquee for 4 years now, what can you say are your favourite aspects about working at the venue? ?

People come to Marquee because they want to be there, they go to have fun and experience something different that you can’t experience elsewhere in Sydney.

Being able to be a part of providing this experience for the guests who actually are excited to be out, and they look forward to what the night will bring, is something I didn’t get the opportunity to do in my previous roles.

What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of working in the industry? ?

Working in a nightclub definitely has some poor stigmas attached to it.

The nightlife industry is quite often looked upon in a negative light, and because of the flexibility and unusual hours people can tend to think it’s not a ‘real job’ and just something to do on the side to earn a bit of extra cash.

What a lot of people don’t realise is that there is a pretty significant team who work behind the scenes all week to ensure we are able to deliver the high quality service our patrons expect.

A venue like Marquee doesn’t just become rated “the best in Sydney” without hard work.

Marquee has built a reputation for being the number one party destination for celebrities and famous DJ’s visiting Australia, has there been any stand out events that you have worked at??

When the movie ‘Django Unchained’ was about to be released in Australia, some of the stars of the movie (Leo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, and Jonah Hill) flew into Sydney and came into Marquee to party for a night! The club was playing Jamie Foxx’s song ‘Golddigger’, and he jumped up on the deck and performed it for everybody!

From your experience in hospitality, do you think it can be a long-term career choice with opportunities to constantly learn and grow??

Absolutely!

Just because it’s not a 9-5 corporate job does not mean that working in hospitality is not a career choice.

It may not be the choice that people expect you to make, and coming from the background I do, it was definitely not the career path my parents expected me to go down.

Working in hospitality offers you endless opportunities. You are constantly meeting different people who are able to help you advance in your career.

Plus you’re meeting them in an environment, like a bar or restaurant, that’s more relaxed – allowing you both to put your guard down and speak openly.

Where do you see yourself in the future and how will your current experience working in hospitality help you get there? ?

I definitely see myself working in this industry.

I like the (Marquee) brand, company and management team I work for, and would love the opportunity to eventually work with either Marquee or another big nightlife venue overseas.

With all your previous experience, what is the best piece of advice you would give to somebody who is about to start their career in hospitality??

With majority of the jobs available in hospitality, you are on the frontline dealing with people everyday.

So take on board everything you learn. You can use all these skills in the future.

Also don’t worry about what anybody thinks. If you’re happy and driven, then stick to what you’re doing.

Just because it may not be what people think you should be doing, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep pursuing it.
