How do we know about these ancient traditions when the people had no

writing?

Oral tradition

From generation to generation stories were passed down in families, clans, tribes, and villages.

As long as words have been spoken there have been storytellers and people to listen to them.

• Stories were a way of explaining things that people did not understand.

In many cultures storytelling is not just narration or speaking.

There is also music and dance, singing and religion.
