TypesWheyProteinWhey Protein Concentrate (WPC) The amount of protein in WPC can varybetween 25-89%. The whey protein powdersupplements in health and nutrition storesoften contain WPC 80%. The remainingcomponents of WPC are lactose, fat, minerals, and moisture.

Whey Protein Isolate (WPI) WPI is the purest form of whey protein andcontains between 90-95% protein. It is agood source of protein for individuals withlactose intolerance as it contains little or nolactose. WPI is also very low in fat.

Hydrolyzed Whey Protein The long protein chains of the whey proteinhave been broken down into shorter chainscalled peptides. This makes the whey proteinmore easily absorbed by the body and mayreduce the potential for allergic reactions.Hydrolyzed whey protein is often used ininfant formula, and sports and medicalnutrition products. Hydrolysis does not reducethe nutritional quality of the whey protein.

Weight ManagementWhey protein, in combination with exercise, can be a safe and effective strategy to weightmanagement. Research suggests that increasing the amount of leucine, an essential amino acid found in whey protein, helps preserve lean muscle tissue while promotingfat loss. Protein also helps to stabilize bloodglucose levels by slowing the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream. This may reduce hunger by lowering insulin levels andmaking it easier for the body to burn fat.

ImmunityWhey protein may help to maintainadequate levels of the antioxidant glu-tathione (GSH), which is needed for ahealthy immune system. Stress, disease, and aging can deplete GSH levels, thusreducing the body’s ability to defend itself.Specific components in whey protein thatmay enhance the immune system includecysteine, lactoferrin, immunoglobulin, and BCAAs.

WellnessWhey protein, high in tryptophan, may reducestress levels in the body. Increased stress levelscan lead to weakened immune health. Wheyprotein may also help to support metabolicprocesses with its ability to bind m inerals, fat-soluble vitamins, and lipids.

Whey protein is a high quality, completeprotein, containing all of the essentialand non-essential amino acids neededby the body. Whey protein is naturallygluten-free. Purified whey protein iso-late (WPI) contains pure protein withminimal lactose, carbohydrates or fat.Whey protein is also a rich source ofbranched chain amino acids. Aminoacids have many benefits including:

• Building and repairing muscles and bones• Repairing body cells• Providing a source of energy• Regulating various processes in the body

related to metabolism

Sports NutritionWhey protein is a rich source of thebranched chain amino acids, isoleucine, leucine, and valine, necessary for buildingmuscle and lean body mass, improving bodycomposition, and enhancing athleticperformance. Whey protein is soluble andquickly absorbed into the body to startrebuilding and repairing lean muscle tissue.

Senior NutritionAs we age, bone and muscle loss are a growingconcern. Good nutrition and adequateamounts of high quality whey protein mayhelp prevent bone loss and maintainmuscle mass.

Infant NutritionWhey protein based infant formulas are anideal protein source, when breast-feeding isnot an option. Whey proteins are a highquality, easily soluble, complete proteinsource containing many of the samecomponents found in human breast milk.
