History happens twice because people don’t listen the first time.

What do you think this means?

Objective• I can evaluate the significance of why it is

important to study and solve a problem by dissecting a prompt.

Partner DiscussionWith your partner, create a definition of HISTORY!!

Class Collaboration• Why is it important to study

history?

What makes up history?• Inventions • Leaders • Empires• Countries• Wars and problems• Can you think of any others?

Video • We will watch a video on why it is important

to study history. As you view the video, please pay close attention to some of the historical problems you notice.

• What were some of the historical world problems you noticed in the video?

Think• Today you will explore how YOU WOULD

SOLVE A WORLD PROBLEM (current or historical)

• Take a few minutes to think about a problem. • On the sheet of paper provided to you – Write the problem down – How would you solve this problem?

Dissecting the Prompt• You all will become brilliant writers this year. I

will guide and help you along the way. • On the top of the poster paper provided, write

the following prompt: –Describe a problem the world has

faced. How would you solve this problem?

How to Dissect the Prompt• Circle the verbs in the prompt (this represents

what you, the writer, are supposed to do). • Underline the noun you will write about. • Under the prompt write five words that

describe your problem and how you would solve it (only words- not sentences). I will model this for you.

Create• Now that you have dissected your prompt, you will

create at least a 5-8 sentence summary of your answer to the prompt.

• You should have a strong introduction sentence and concluding sentence.

• Use your 5 words to help you write the middle supporting sentences.
