head coach julie woodward17th season/seattle university ‘93 The dean of coaches at Seattle University, Julie Woodward has earned the respect of her peers with her style of coaching. During her 16 coaching sea-sons, she boasts 14 winning seasons, establishing her as the winningest coach in SU women’s soccer history with a 215-88-28 overall record and a .649 winning percentage following the 2012 season. She coached her 200th career win on Sept. 18, 2011 in a 3-1 victory over San Diego State University. Seattle University’s former two-time NAIA All-American soccer player came home to her alma
mater as the head coach of the Redhawks women’s soccer program over a decade ago. She has coached the Redhawks to three NCAA Division II Tour-nament appearances (2004, 2006 and 2007). A 2004 Far West Coach of the Year, she boasts three NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division II honorees, two All-Pacific Region and 18 Far West Region selections, three GNAC Players of the Year, eight GNAC all-conference team honorees and 27 players who have earned NAIA All-America accolades. Her teams have also boasted great academic success in her tenure, including a 2007 NCAA Woman of the Year, the 2011 NSCAA Team Academic Award, five CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans and 20 CoSIDA ESPN The Maga-zine All-District selections. Woodward was honored at Seattle U’s Annual Alumni Awards Celebration in April 2012, receiving the 2012 University Service Award.
23rd minute, Stephanie Verdoia, assisted by Heather Thomas, tied the game on a
free kick from the west sideline at midfield before flicking the ball over Purdue keeper Jordan Ginther’s head. Just seven and a
half minutes later, in the 30th minute, Alex Hairston regained the lead for the Boiler-makers, driving the ball in from the right side and sinking it into the top half of the net. Hadley Stuart made the assist on the goal. Fighting back, Jacqui Wallis scored her first goal of the season in the 40th
minute to re-tie the match, 2-2. Verdoia and Kat Prati, with the assists, made two short right-to-left passes to Wallis before
sinking the ball into the wide open net. In the Redhawks’ second overtime match of
the weekend, neither team was able to add to their score as the contest ended in a
draw, 2-2. Verdoia led the Redhawks with two shots, both on goal, while Williams led Purdue with six shots, two on goal. Mariah O’Neil made her first collegiate appearance for Seattle U. Brianna Smallidge recorded all 110 minutes in goal for the Redhawks,
making eight saves. Ginther made two saves in goal for the Boilermakers.
Butler (9/6): Stephanie Verdoia, Taylor
Ritzman, and Natasha Howe took shots for the Redhawks in the first half, with Howe’s on goal, but could not sink them in the net
as the score remained tied, 0-0, at half. In the 59th minute, Sophia Maccagnone scored her fourth goal of the season from 27 yards out on a free kick to put Butler
ahead, 1-0. The Bulldogs made three more shots in regulation as Verdoia added
a header in the 84th minute for SU. In the 90th minute, just 44 seconds before the end of regulation, Kraft broke through and scored the tying goal, her first of the season, a shot from 20 yards out in mid-
field, to send the game into overtime. Julia Besagno headed the ball towards the goal
in the 91st minute, but it sailed wide right, with Butler adding four other shots, none
successful, to send the game into a second overtime. In the second overtime, Verdoia added another shot, while Brianna Smal-
lidge saved two more, with a third blocked, but neither team could sink the ball in the
goal as the match finished in a 1-1 tie. Verdoia led the Redhawks with four shots while Maccagnone led the Bulldogs with
six as they outshot the Redhawks, 18-8. In goal, Smallidge recorded all 110 minutes, making one save while Julie Burton repre-

sented Butler in goal making one save.
Howe and Smallidge Named WAC Players of the Week (Aug. 26-Sept. 1): Natasha Howe and Brianna Smallidge were named the
Western Athletic Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, a career first for both and SU’s first ever WAC
Defensive Player of the Week nod. Howe, in just her third collegiate match, came in off the bench to score the game-winner in overtime vs. Boise State on Aug. 30 in the Redhawks’ 2-1 win. Howe was also named WAC Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. Smallidge earned her second win of the season vs. the Broncos, allowing just
one goal, while making three saves for a .750 save percentage, her second highest
of the season thus far.
Boise State (8/30): After nearly 30 score-less minutes, Stephanie Verdoia drove the ball towards the goal and was pulled down
by Boise State keeper Maddy McDevitt, resulting in a penalty kick. Julia Besagno)
took the penalty kick, which was good, resulting in a 1-0 lead for the Redhawks,
a lead they took into the halftime break. In the 55th minute, Boise State’s Shannon
Schueren, assisted by Ashley Hruby, drove the ball in for her first goal of the season to tie the game, 1-1. A back-and-forth contest for the remainder of regulation, the match went into overtime. Boise State made three unsuccessful shots in the first half of the
overtime period, but in the 99th min-ute, Howe broke through the Boise State
defenders to score her first collegiate goal, the golden goal.
Eastern Washington (8/25): The game remained scoreless at the half, but an of-fensive surge by the Redhawks following
halftime led to a 2-0 Seattle U victory. Less than five minutes after the halftime break, Julia Moravec drove a shot from the right
side, assisted by Stephanie Verdoia, to give the team a 1-0 lead. In the 77th minute, Verdoia added a goal of her own, a cross
across the box assisted by Mary Hill to give the Redhawks a 2-0 lead. SU outshot EWU, 16-6, with 12 of the Redhawks’ shots com-
ing in the second half.
Washington State (8/23): After a continual exchange of possession between the two teams for the first 20 minutes, Stephanie Verdoia dribbled the ball into the box be-
fore being taken down by a WSU defender, forcing a penalty kick opportunity. Julia
Besagno converted on the penalty kick, giv-
ing the Redhawks a 1-0 lead. The Seattle U defense, however, could not maintain
the lead, as Kailiana Johnson nudged the ball over the goal line after a free kick was
blocked, tying the game 1-1 going into halftime. Just after halftime, Jocelyn Jef-
fers took the lead for the Cougars, 2-1, sail-ing a shot into the left side of the net past SU keeper Brianna Smallidge. WSU added an insurance goal just over three minutes later as Micaela Castain scored the final goal to give the Cougars the win, 3-1.
