MATISSE 'S CUT OUTS
Fauvism is a colourful style of art and comes from the French term “Wild Beasts”. Arising in
the early 1900's, the style is known for artists using bright and unrealistic colours, and quick
and expressive brushstrokes.
Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954) was s French artist, and one of the co-creators of Fauvism.
Towards the end of his life and career, he isolated colour and shape, creating more abstract
artworks with coloured cut-outs.
Left: Henri Matisse. 1905. Woman with a Hat (Femme au Chapeau). [Oil on canvas]. Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco.
Right: Henri Matisse. The Sheaf {La Gerbe). 1953. [Gouache on paper, cut and pasted, on paper, mounted on canvas]. Hammer
Museum, Los Angeles.
ACTIVITY: Below are some shapes with dotted outlines. Using coloured pencils or textas,
COLOUR these in using only one colour for each shape. Then, with a pair of scissors CUT
these shapes out along the dotted line - you can ask a parent or guardian to help cut out the
more difficult shapes. Arrange the shapes on a new piece of paper in a pattern you like, then
use a glue stick to STICK them down.
EXTRA CHALLENGE: DESIGN your own set of abstract shapes, then follow the same steps
above to create another unique piece!
