Project Case Study - 1
Location Mount Isa Mines – Copper Operations
Project Description Removal and replacement of the Thickener #3 wall sections
Duration 19 days (day and night shifts)
Project History:
The #3 thickener processes tailings from the copper operations and is a vital component of the water
recycling system on the Mount Isa Mines site. This thickener ensures that the tailings contain the
minimum amount of process water whilst redundant process water is returned to the surge tanks
for re-use. The #3 thickener has been in operation for approximately 40 years and the wall sections
were showing significant wear and corrosion and were leaking in places, thickness testing was
carried out and the decision was made to replace the steel wall sections.
Project Scope:
World Welding and Transport Services were engaged by Mount Isa Mines to assist in the de-
construction of the old wall sections, saw cutting and demolition of the existing ring beam and re-
construction / installation (on site welding) of the new steel wall sections.
World Welding and Transport Services Pty. Ltd. COMPANY PROFILE
14 | P a g e
Challenges:
The main challenge on this project was time. As the thickener is a vital part of the site’s water
recycling the downtime had to be kept to a minimum. From start to finish this project took 19 days
to complete, working around the clock.
Other challenges include interaction with other work fronts and operations.
Safety
With approximately 1500 man-hours of exposure time and no injuries, this project is a testament
that zero harm can be achieved on all projects, the thoroughness of the risk assessment and hazard
management on this project were vital to this achievement.
Client Reference:
“I would like to pass on the Concentrator Management Team’s appreciation of your efforts over the
duration of the Thickener Wall project. It has been a huge ask on our part and you have all
contributed to an excellent outcome, mitigating one of the most significant risks to the site process
water system. The fact that we managed to complete the works to a high standard, within the
planned duration and injury free is testament to yourselves and further evidence that zero harm is a
practical goal.”

Project Case Study - 2
Location Mount Isa Mines – Copper Operations
Project Description Replacement of 02 SAG mill Discharge end
Duration 5 days (day and night shifts)
Project History:
The discharge end of 02 SAG mill was identified as beyond end of life and needed to be replaced, the
works had to be carried out during a 5 day shutdown to minimize plant downtime. WWATS was
engaged to assist in design, methodology, project coordination and site execution to complete the
works.
Project Scope:
World Welding and Transport Services were engaged by Mount Isa Mines Copper Operations to
assist in the design for the new discharge end, provide construction methodologies, coordinate
fabricated long lead items and de-construct / re-construct the discharge end during the shutdown.
The on-site scope was to remove the existing hood, then remove the scats return hopper followed
by the removal of the discharge trommel. Once the trommel was removed, the discharge chute had
to be removed along with the adaptor ring from the mill to the discharge trommel. Once this was
complete the structural steel support beams required replacement before reconstruction could
commence.
World Welding and Transport Services Pty. Ltd. COMPANY PROFILE
16 | P a g e
Challenges:
The main challenge on this project was interaction with other activities being carried out in the same
area i.e. mill reline. This challenge required excellent communication on site between the relevant
parties to ensure safety was maintained at all times and minimize downtime.
Safety
Safety through the design and planning phase assisted the site crew with early identification of
hazards and what controls to be implemented to control these hazards including elimination
through design. With approximately 1000 man-hours of exposure time and no injuries, this project
is a testament that zero harm can be achieved on all projects, the thoroughness of the risk
assessment and hazard management on this project and during the planning phase were vital to this
achievement.

Location Mount Isa Mines – 02 SAG Mill Pumpbox Replacement
Project Description Removal and replacement of the discharge pumpbox at 02 SAG Mill
Duration Fabrication 5 days (day and night shifts)
On site replacement 4 days (day and night shifts)
Project History:
The discharge pumpbox at 02 SAG mill was identified as being in the need of replacement as it had
reached end of life. This pumpbox is a vital part of the overall process hence it was critical to have it
replaced in a timely fashion to reduce production downtime.
Project Scope:
World Welding and Transport Services were engaged by Mount Isa Mines to develop a methodology
for replacement, fabricate a new pumpbox and replace this during the November shutdown.
WWATS designed, fabricated and installed a monorail structure to enable the replacement.
World Welding and Transport Services Pty. Ltd. COMPANY PROFILE
18 | P a g e
Challenges:
The main challenge on this project was the timeframe in which the pumpbox was to be fabricated
and also the installation timeframe was to be kept to a minimum to reduce the downtime of the SAG
Mill. One of the vital components (supplied by the client) was identified to be incorrect during the
installation, WWATS modified the component to enable installation, the additional works were
carried out during the shutdown without affecting the completion time.
Safety
With approximately 1800 man-hours of exposure time and no injuries, this project is a testament
that zero harm can be achieved on all projects, the thoroughness of the pre-planning, risk
assessment and hazard management on this project were vital to this achievement.
