Why do we want to get Parents involved in Writing?

Our aims

Good reading often goes together with good writing (not always though!)

Better readers have broader vocabularies, understand different genres and are more familiar with how writing ‘works’.

Encourage your child to read often, widely and to really enjoy and savour books.

Writing and Reading togther!

V OCUBULARY, using ‘wow’ words e.g. ‘the girl ran down the street…the girl sprinted down the street’.

C ONNECTIVES, joining words, not just ‘and’ e.g. because, before, until, then, if, next.

O PENERS, ‘she climbed the mountain…Carefully, she climbed the mountain’

P UNCTUATION, begins with full stops in KS1

Children will still participate in a daily phonics session in KS1 and weekly spellings are sent home.

Support your child with saying the sounds correctly and learning their spellings but it’s not the be all and end all!

Children will be working in Phase 3, 4, 5 and 6 phonics, you can google ‘Phase 4 phonic games’ for example.

Phonics and spelling

Children are generally working within Level 1 and Level 2 for writing in Years 1 and 2, some children will be above or below this depending on their individual needs.

It is useful to know what is expected in these levels…

Marking writing in KS1

Children are encouraged to check and correct their work, Teachers work hard to support children to improve their writing.

Children are moving into joining their letters, this helps with writing fluency.

Please support the school by encouraging your child to write with the school handwriting style.

Handwriting

Fiction Stories with a familiar setting, stories with an

unfamiliar setting, stories from another culture, playscripts, poetry.

Non-fiction Instructions, recounts, letter writing

It is important that children know the ‘recipes’ for each genre, understand who they are writing for (audience) and how they can improve their work. You can help your child to help them spot these things when you are reading together.

What kind of writing happens a school?

The children really enjoy this in Years 1 and 2, they may come home and talk to you about this!

How it works… The Teachers cleverly build up to the writing

task with drama, artefacts, letters from a special person etc. There is always something to write about! This is a special time in which children are encouraged to write at length for.
