WYOMING DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

SUPPLEMENTARY SPECIFICATIONFOR

CERTIFICATION FOR ULTRASONIC QUALITY FIELD WELDING

This supplementary specification supplements, amends, and where in conflict therewith, supersedes Subsection 501.4.1.11, Welding and Examination of Welded Joints, of the2003 edition of Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction.

A. General

1. Ensure all welders performing field welding designated to meet therequirements of ultrasonic testing possess a current Wyoming Departmentof Transportation Welder Certification Card for vertical and overheadpositions in unlimited thickness for the process to be used and are qualifiedby the test specified herein.

2. Field welding is defined as welding that is performed at the projectconstruction site.

3. Only those welders representing a contractor currently under contract withthe department are considered eligible for this test. The test must beperformed within the state of Wyoming.

4. A representative of the Wyoming Department of Transportation BridgeEngineer will witness the preparation and welding of all test specimens andwill ultrasonically test the specimen at the test location. The welder will paya fee of $100 for the complete ultrasonic test qualification.

B. Ultrasonic Qualification Test

1. Equipment: Use only portable engine-driven welders for test welds.

2. Test Plates will be either ASTM A36/A36M; ASTM A572/A572M, Grade 50[345]; ASTM A588/A588M; or ASTM A709, Grade 36 [250], 50 [345], or 50W[345W]. Two plates, 1 in [25 mm] by 12 in [305 mm] by 8 in [200 mm]minimum are required for each position. (See Figure 2)

3. One test weld is required for vertical position, and one test weld is requiredfor flat/overhead position.

4. Position of test welds:

a. For the vertical test, the weld plate will be in an approximately verticalplane with the welding groove approximately vertical. (See Figure 1 -AWS Test Position 3G)

b. For the flat/overhead test, the weld plate will be in an approximatelyhorizontal plane with the weld metal deposited from the top/bottom asrequired. (See Figure 1 - AWS Test Position 1G/4G)

5. Use electrodes conforming to AWS Classification E7018 or E71T-8 for thetest welds.

6. For each test position, ensure the base metal has a double groove butt jointprepared as shown in Figure 2.

7. Use extension bars or run-off tabs.

8. Ensure the minimum preheat and interpass temperature is 200° F [93° C].Ensure the welder furnishes and uses temperature indicating crayons for thecontrol of preheat and interpass temperature.

9. Welding is allowed after removal of the run-off tabs and at any stage of finishgrinding.

10. Conduct weld cleaning with the test weld in the same position as the weldingposition. Power grinders and chippers are permitted for use in cleaning.

11. The progression for all passes in vertical position welding is upwards.

12. Prior to ultrasonic testing, remove the extension bars or run-off tabs, andgrind all exposed surfaces of the weld flush.

13. Any specimen reduced in thickness or not fully prepared for ultrasonic testingwill be rejected.

14. Ensure the test welds are ultrasonically tested by the manufacture inaccordance with Section 6, Part C of the AASHTO/AWS Bridge WeldingCode, D1.5 [AWS D1.5].

15. Ensure the test welds meet the requirements for ultrasonic inspection ofwelds subject to tensile stress as specified in section 6.26.3 of AWS D1.5.

Revised 7-9-04

16. If a weld specimen fails to meet the requirements of AWS D1.5, oneimmediate attempt to repair the weld is allowed.

17. If the weld specimen passes the ultrasonic test, the welder will be issued asupplemental Wyoming Department of Transportation Welder CertificationCard with Ultrasonic Certification for Field Welding, which remains in effectindefinitely unless there is some specific reason to question the welder'sultrasonic quality welding ability.
