What is zotero?

• Open source software that runs in your browser.

• You create your own personal database of sources as you browse online catalogs, databases, and Web sites.

How does zotero do this?• zotero can “sense” items on currently

viewed Web pages of supported sites:–Books , journal articles ,

Web sites , audio files , etc.

–Folder lets you select items you want from your results lists.

What can you do with your zotero

database?–Organize information in files.–Highlight and annotate documents.–Cross reference and tag related

materials.– Insert citations & create bibliographies

in Word documents.–Export/import citations to/from other

citation management software.

Getting started• One of these browsers must be used:

–Firefox 2.0 or higher–Netscape 9.0–Flock 0.9.1

• Download Zotero from:http://www.zotero.org/

Creating Citations and a Bibliography

in a Word Document• Download zotero’s Microsoft Word plug-

in :http://www.zotero.org/documentation/microsoft_word_integration• A new row of icons for creating will be

added to your Microsoft toolbar.***Important note:Icons you need will appear in the Add-Ins tab if you are using Word 2007!

Searching your citation database

• Quick search*not case sensitive

• Tag search• *make sure Show Automatic and

Display All Tags are selected • Advanced search

Export: zotero Refworks

Export Library

Select sources

A text file is created.

Export: zotero Refworks

Import the text file to Refworks.

• “Capture” and annotate Web pages.• Cite references and create

bibliographies in Word documents.• Make a staff zotero database on your

network for selected sources.• Use with Google Books and Google

Scholar to drag formatted references into Google Docs.
