What’s an amphibian?An amphibian…• is born in the water.

• lives both on land and in the water.

• has gills when young, lungs as an adult.

• has webbed feet.

• is cold-blooded.

• has smooth, wet skin.

• has four legs or no legs.

• Lays many eggs.

What are some amphibians?

Red Salamander The Red Salamander…• has a red-orange body with

black sports, short legs and yellow eyes.

• eats mostly earthworms but also other insects, spiders and smaller salamanders.

• is about 3 ½ to 7 inches long.

• lives in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern parts of the US.

• can be found by cold clear springs under rocks and debris.

• can live in the water or on land.

• has dry scaly skin.

• usually lays eggs.

• has ear holes instead of ears.

• is cold-blooded.

The American AlligatorThe American Alligator…• is found in the southeastern part of

the US, mostly in Florida.

• is one of two species of alligators in the world; the other is in China.

• can grow up to fourteen ft. long; in rare cases they can grow longer.

• has rough, boney scales.

• has about 80 teeth in their mouth but have about two-three thousand in their lifetime.

• egg temperature determines if a male or female hatches; males are only born in moderate temperatures, females are born in hot or cold temperatures.

But I thought Frogs & Toads were the same…Frogs and toads, although both are amphibians are not the same; they have some of the same characteristics but many differences:

Slimy, Smooth Skin

Have teeth in top jaws

Bulging Eyes

Lay eggs in clusters

Jump

Dry, Warty Skin

Poison glands behind the eyes

No teeth

Lay eggs in chains

Walk

Have a brain

Amphibians

Hatch from eggs

Young have gills, adults have lungs

Live in water

Has a heart

Has a backbone
