At Gfl we apply green thinking to every action to benefit the environment, our customers, partners, community and our people. We are committed to making a positive impact on the environment by implementing effective green practices.

We have chosen to start moving from virgin to Post-Consumer recycled plastic, to reduce our CO2 impact and CO2 emissions. Amongst plastics, we use mostly PET because of its excellent recycling capabilities. Other packaging such as caps or other plastic components are mainly made of recycled Post-Consumer plastics.

Continuously looking for innovative packaging to increase recyclability such as our “ECO” easy to peel label, laser coding, or soap packaging that can be recycled as paper.

We favor the use of cosmetics with less impact on the aquatic ecosystem. Eu Ecolabel, Cosmos, Nordic Ecolabel are only some examples of our contribution to reduce the CVD-TOX.

At Gfl we have embraced the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals as part of our corporate governance system. 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. GREEN CERTIFICATIONS

We apply the most contemporary concepts, and select the highest quality raw materials to create our formulations. From environmentally friendly cosmetics with certifications including Cosmos organic, Nordic Ecolabel and Eu Ecolabel, and RSPO certified mass balance to high-impact luxury collections with unforgettable scents. Moreover, all of our products are registered at the EU Ministry of Health and conform to FDA regulations.

Ecocert, a private organization operating in over 80 countries worldwide, certifies the organic nature of cosmetics, examining the entire production process, from the selection of raw materials to waste treatment. This association of professionals of the cosmetics industry brings together suppliers of raw materials, laboratories, manufacturers and distributors.

The Cosmos standard is guided by four core principles.Promoting the use of products from organic agriculture, and respecting biodiversity. Using natural resources responsibly, and respecting the environment. Using processing and manufacturing that are clean and respectful of human health and the environment. Integrating and developing the concept of “green chemistry”.

Eu Ecolabel is a trademark granted by the European Commission to products that meet strict ecological criteria throughout their entire life cycle (formula, packaging and overall characteristics).

Nordic Ecolabel is a European ecolabelling scheme that evaluates a product’s impact on the environment throughout the whole life cycle. Nordic Ecolabel certifies Rinse-off products as well as lotions.

100% Vegetable soap. On request, we are able to supply soap made with RSPO (Roundtable for Sustainable Palm oil) from our certified source.

The Forest Stewardship Council is an international non-profit, multi-stakeholder organisation established in 1993 to promote responsible management of the world’s forests. The FSC does this by setting standards on forest products, along with certifying and labelling them as eco-friendly.

Ingredients • NO petroleum derivative. • NO carcinogenic substances. • NO toxic fragrances. • NO potential aggressive preservatives

like parabens, formaldehyde, BHT. • Colouring agents with heavy metals

Differenttypes of “bio”

DESIGN FOR RECYCLING

• PCR: Post-Consumer Resins - plastic that has been reprocessed to be re used in new manufacturing; consisting of a blend or recycled resins that would have become urban waste. This our main priority.

• PIR: Post Industrial Resins - plastic waste recovered from industrial processes; consisting of a blend or recycled resins resulting from industrial waste.

• BIO-BASED: material resin made out of organic feedstocks, such as corn, sugar cane, potato. This type of material does not necessarily biodegrade. Compostable: in order to be considered compostable, a material has to fulfill the three following criteria according to EN13432:

• Disintegration: the ability of the material to break down and fall apart.

• Biodegradation: the inherent nature of the material to be consumed by microorganisms (90% broken down in 6 months) Ecotoxicity: the non-inhibition of plant growth or the survival of soil or aquatic fauna after biodegradation.

In the market, the prefix “BIO” before “plastics”, or “polymers” is used with 3 different meanings:

1. The origin of the materials

2. The biodegradability

3. The biocompatibility

The term bioplastics however requires more clarification as to which BIO property we refer to:

CORDILLERA NATIONAL PARK REDD PROJECTPROJECT OVERVIEWPeru’s Cordillera Azul National Park is a natural protected area created in 2001 with a core zone totalling 1.35 million hectares and a buffer zone of 2.3 million hectares.It protects the entire, contiguous range of biological communities from dwarf vegetation and the mountain crest to the tall rainforest along lowland rivers. The unusual geological formations with acidic soils, the large number of unique species and species assemblages, and the abundance of game birds and large mammals, all point to the high conservation values of the project area.

The project’s primary objective is to prevent deforestation in Cordillera Azul National Park by focusing on:

• Protecting the park

• Building local capacity for sustainable land use and improving the quality of life in the buffer zone communities.

• Strengthening relationships with local, regional and national government agencies.

TechnologyThis project protects a vast expanse of vegetation with native species. No invasive, non-native, or genetically modified species will be used or introduced into the park as part of this project. The protected area includes intact forest from the lowlands (at 2,400 meters)

and protects an eastern outlier of the Andes that has been isolated sufficiently long for massive speciation to occur.

BenefitsThe park protects landscapes important for the traditional cultural identity of indigenous people. Protect activities will ensure the continuation of the ecosystem service provides to the communities by the project area, allow communities to meet their basics needs in a sustainable manner and allow for the project area to continue providing the ecosystem services needs for communities to retail their traditional cultural identities.

Results and impactsThe project will increase:Net income for community residents from project-related employment. Environmental awareness through school-based and informal education programs.Empowerment to protect community-based models. Improvement in infrastructure at communal level will lead to more sustainable use of natural resources and lead to self sufficiency. Estimated GH emission reduction or removals (tCO2e) during 20 years crediting period are around a6 millions tones of CO2-e.

How does the CO2 compensation work?• We start with the calculation of the carbon footprint, or the

calculation of the C02 emissions related to the life cycle of each product in the range.

• Our life cycle mapping is based on the “Cradle to gate system”.

• This mapping takes into account the phases of the life cycle up to the point where the finished product leaves the place of production. Emissions related to the consumption and disposal of the asset are not included.

• Once this data is known, compensation can be done by financing a project that avoids (or removes from the atmosphere) a quantity of C02 emissions equivalent to those of the products of our range.

Compensation step by step

• The projects that are part of this compensation mechanism are verified by independent companies and are subject to constant controls to verify their regularity and actual contribution in terms of positive impact on the climate.

• On a practical level, compensation is made by purchasing credits or carbon credits. Each credit is equivalent to the reduction of one ton of C02; the project expects to buy as many credits as the tons of C02 issued to produce the complete range. The credits purchased are deposited in special public registers under the name of Gfl.

• The official recognition of the compensation occurs by canceling the credits, in this way the compensation is easily verifiable by anyone and those credits cannot be used twice.

• The carbon footprint is calculated on an annual basis; therefore, to maintain the carbon neutrality achieved, regulation is needed annually.

• For our project we will purchase credits at the end of each year.

We use a method to offset the annual emission of CO2 generated during the production of some of our brands. (i.e. Geneva Green)

Before we can tackle the problem, we need to understand“the history of plastic”.

Plastic originally meant “pliable and easily shaped.”

1 32 4The first polymer was invented in 1869 by John Wesley Hyatt, to create a substitute for ivory in the billiards industry because so many elephants were being killed. For several decades, polymers were made from natural materials only.

From 1950 and over the next 65 years, annual production of plastics increased from almost 200-tons to 381 million tonnes in 2015.

In 1907, Leo Baekeland invented Bakelite, the first fully synthetic plastic that was used in electrical insulators, radio and telephone casings etc. Plastics have led to technological advances, design solutions, and financial savings.

By the end of 2015, a total of 8,300 metric tons of new plastic was produced. The biggest irony of all is that when we look back at the history of plastic it was developed with the good intention to protect nature.

CO2 emission is the cause of global warning.High-income countries do not manage CO2 very well and it remains the most serious problem to solve.

A recent article on Environmental Leader argues the PET is environmentally superior to glass or aluminum as a food/beverage packaging material. Our recent studies confirm that PET has significantly lower life-cycle GHG emissions compared to glass or virgin aluminum.

For a typical 12 oz container, here are some examples: GHG emissions figures based on materials and fabrication (assuming container weights of 365 g for glass, 54 g for PET, 40 g for aluminum):

PET would be the best choice from a carbon footprint perspective, glass becomes even less attractive because of its weight. Both aluminum and glass production require very high temperatures and are therefore very energy intensive.

PLASTIC CAN BE MANAGED.It is the management of plastic waste that determines the risk of plastic entering the ocean.

CO2 emissions are the cause of global warming.Plastic waste management is one of the areas in which the biggest steps can be taken to effect change in bringing about progressive reductions in the quantity of resources, materials and energy used in production processes. High-income countries have very effective waste management systems; mismanaged waste and plastic that ends up in the oceans is therefore very rare.

Poor waste management across many middle and low-income countries means that these are the main sources of global ocean plastic pollution. Most of the plastic we have in the oceans comes mainly from Asia, Africa and South America.

Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
