Renal Failure• Medical Management or Surgery

– Acute (trauma, meds, infection) and Chronic (DM, HTN) Renal Failure • The kidneys play key roles in body function, not only by filtering the blood and getting

rid of waste products, but also by balancing levels of electrolytes (Na & K) in the body, controlling blood pressure, and stimulating the production of red blood cells.

• Pre-Renal: Decreased blood supply to the kidney, low blood volume, dehydration, diuretics

• Renal causes : Sepsis, UTI, Meds, Rhabdomyolysis, Myeloma, Glomerulonephritis• Post-Renal: Obstruction of the bladder or ureters, BPH, HTN, kidney stones

– Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis

• Course in hospital– Emergency → General Floor– Dialysis on any unit

• Precautions/Contraindications– BP issues: usually very low post dialysis– Usually no patient contact during dialysis
