This would benet the revised Buddhist Canon, later. He always sought out the Tripitaka and collected them for future use.

King Tak Sin the Great had great faith in Buddhism and he gave his own money to restore many temples, he up graded many temples to be Royal temples such as Wat Arun-rajvararam, Wat Rakang Kositaram, Wat Intraram and so on. In 1773 he ordered the law for the monks behaviour to be issued. This was the rst law of the monks commu-nity in Thailand, and he created law and order for Thai society based on Buddhism.

At the result of winning the war in Wieng Chan (Lao), King Taksin the Great ordered the Emerald Buddha from Wieng Chan to be brought to Thon Buri capital and he provided a

    King Tak Sin the GreatDevelopment

In the rst 2 years of King Tak Sin the Greats rule. Thailand (Siam) was in economic crisis because Thailand lost the war with Burma (Myanmar). People left their premises, they had no chance to develop agriculture, some of those Burmese were captured and taken to Burma. King Tak Sin the Great tried to recover this situation by contributing money to the people. Traders brought goods for sale in the Thon Buri capital. This made the economy better also people who had left their premises came back and started to live as they had lived before.

Although the economy was not perfect, King Tak Sin the Great managed to trade with India and China. He also used any way he could to stop the foreign traders and to protect the people, in his reign there were always wars. But he had a new idea of creating roads and canals in the capital to make it easier to transport trade goods, and in war. That is why there are lots of

themselves well. King Tak Sin the Great ordered temples to create libraries to col-lect and keep all books which were lost by war, in order to provide education for the monks and people.

King Taksin the Great was a devout Bud-dhist, he also supported it well. The ancient records mention that after he defeated Chantaburi. He thought the next war, to rehabilitate the country, was very important, he then followed in the footsteps of King Naresuon the Great by creating Phra Yod Thong, Ayutthaya style. Then he invited the senior monks to chant Jayamangala Gatha and concentrate on the Phra Yod Thong. This he believed would succeed in rehabilitating Thailand once again.

After King Tak Sin the Great had created Thonburi as the Capital. He went on to defeat Jaao Phra Phangs clique, and as he had seen the monks behave badly, he invited the senior monks from Thon Buri to show them how to follow the rule of Bud-dhism. In these circumstances he ordered a modication of the monks community in order to make Buddhism pure. He also brought Tripitaka (the three divisions of

roads and cannels in Thon Buri capital.

The reign of King Tak Sin the Great was a time of revival in education. Many temples were used as institutions of education. The boys had a great chance to stay at the temple and study the Thai language, Khmer language, Pali language as well as the Buddhist teaching with the monks. They were also able to study arithmetic, the metric system, building, for the profes-sions they mainly learned from their parents and professional lineage. The girls had to learn how to cook, do needlework and house work, as well as how to behave

Two lucky winners from amthaipaper fanpage have received two free Carabao

concert tickets from khun Suchard, the organiser.

London resident, Andrejus Vasiaginas 29, is celebrating after receiving VIP Premier League treatment during a football weekend of a lifetime, having won a competition with Thai lager brand and Everton FC sponsor, Chang Beer.

Andrejus, who has never been to watch a live football match in the UK, since moving to London from Lithuania three years ago, chose to take his best friend along for the action packed weekend. They were treated to a personal shopping experience at Harvey Nichols, where they were given 250 to spend followed by a cocktail master-class and Thai banquet dinner at award-winning restaurant Chaophraya with the Everton FC legends. The following day saw them watching a training session at Finch Farm, the clubs official training round, including lunch with the players, followed by a private penthouse dinner at members only Beetham Tower in Liverpool. They also attended Everton FCs Player of the Year Awards, where they rubbed shoulders

with the likes of Phil Neville and Marouane Fellaini.

To top it all off they took a pre-match dressing room tour and watched Everton beat Newcastle United 3-1 from the comfort of Changs VIP box, before settling down in style at the Liverpool Malmaison.

Andrejus commented on the experience: I came across the competition after deciding to try different global beers from my local supermarket and needless to say I was in complete shock when I found out Id won. Id never been to Liverpool or to a football stadium in the UK until this weekend and so this really was an experience of a lifetime and Id like to thank Chang Beer for the amaz-ing prize.

Andrejus and his friend were also joined by two other UK winners as well as winners from Belgium and Australia, who were own in for the experience of a lifetime.

Dr Kriengsak Chareonwongsak Senior Fellow, Harvard KennedySchool,

    Harvard University [email protected], http://www.kriengsak.com

Women in Economic and Social Development175,900 women which was less than the average unemployment rate for men which was 1.1 percent or approximate 226,300 men. For the public sector, the ratio of women as government ocers at level 1 - 8 is higher than men while at level 9-11 men have a higher ratio than women.

The reason why Thai women have become more involved in economic development than women in many other countries, I believe is because this issue has received considerable attention from the public sector for a long time. There is the womens development plan which has been consistently planned along with the national economic and social development plan. Because of the womens develop-ment plan, awareness of non-governmental organizations and communities has been increased. Organizations and mechanisms to protect womens rights have been set up at all levels. Moreover, the national government, local governments and govern-mental agencies have implemented policies that empower women. For example, the Thai government has recently set up the National Development Fund for Women. The Governments budget for this project is around 7.7 billion baht or an average of 100 million baht per province. This policy will be very useful for the economic devel-opment of women if the fund is managed effectively, the operation is run transpar-ently, without the intervention of political parties and all women can fully access

    to the fund.

However, the above is only one aspect in womens development, the economic development, which cant fully reect the entire picture of womens development. So, we should consider womens development in other aspects as well such as politics and other social aspects and so on. Because if we consider other aspects, we will nd that Thai women still have many problems which are waiting for solutions such as family violence, sexual harassment, security, exploitation and the attitude of society towards women, etc.

There is considerable empirical evidence pointing out that if women are developed in various dimensions, society will be developed both directly and indirectly. Therefore, the government should give serious priority to womens development so that they will be able to help acceler-ate the nation and social development. As Mr.Ko Anan, former United Nations Secretary-General, once said there is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women.

    amthai

Women have played an important role in driving economic growth. In many countries, womens entering into the labor market is critical to economic development. However, more than half of the women around the world still dont have a job. At this time when governments around the world are seeking short and long term solutions for economic development, expanding the eco-nomic opportunities to 1.5 billion women who are not employed including eliminating the social, educational, legal and nancial barriers for women would be extremely important.

Thus, to measure the progress of eco-nomic development in women, the Womens Economic Opportunity (WEO) Index was created by the Economist Intelligence Unit. This index considers the factors that affect womens access to economic opportunities in 5 dimensions which are 1) labor policies and practices (such as, is there employment discrimi-nation?) 2) access to nancial capital for women 3) education and training for women 4) womens legal and social status 5) the general business environment (such as the availability of infrastructure, the accessing of technology and energy, etc.). In each dimension, there are many sub indicators.

Data for this index is collected from vari-ous international organizations, including the United Nations (UN), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and many others.

One hundred and twenty-eight countries have been ranked and Thailand is one of these countries. In 2012, the top ve coun-tries where womens economic opportunity is the highest are Sweden, Norway, Finland, Belgium and Australia respectively. Thailand is in a good position as it is ranked 47th in the world and 2nd in Asia, behind only Singapore which is ranked 31st in the world (while Malaysias rank is 53rd, the Philippines 74th, Indonesia 85th, Vietnam 87th, Cambodia 96th and Laos 109th). In addition, for the lower middle income coun-tries, where the average income is 976 to 3,855 U.S. dollars per year; Thailand ranks number one of these 39 countries with a score of 60.1 points (out of 100) which is an increase from the year 2010.

If we consider womens economic opportunities in Thailand, it seems that the situation is better than in many other countries. In the year 2010, the participa-tion rate of women in the labor force was 64.3 percent which was lower than men (80.7 percent). The average unemployment rate for women was 1.0 percent or about

In May we visited Siam restaurant, located in the heart of Soho. The restaurant is situated in Frith Street, oppose a house where Mozart once lived.

It was a busy Friday evening but the service was very attentive and the food arrived in good time. We tried three starters. Laab Pla Salmon, which was grilled and avoured with herbs, together with Hoy Shell (Nong Note) Pad Cha, stir fried scallops with ginger. They were both very tasty, with rich but subtle a-vours. We were particularly taken with the third starter, which were spicy sausages (E-Sarn Sausage). This is a speciality dish from northeastern Thailand, which was very authentic.

After this delicious starter we had Pra

Nung Ma Naew, steamed sea bass llets in lime juice. This too is a traditional Thai dish and was well cooked with the lime bringing out the favourite of the delicious sh. We had it with Kao Pad Supparod, pineapple rice with chicken and prawns. This had a soft avour which nicely complimented the sea bass.

To round things off we had Thai pancakes with ice cream. We chose this because it is a favourite Thai dessert for us, and it was a lovely treat to end a delicious meal. Overall, it was a sumptuous experience. Highly recommended.

His Excellency Poom Sarapol, Thai Deputy Minister of Commerce, is set to be the guest of honour at the celebration event of Tastes of Thailand, a promotion sup-porting fresh Thai produce in Tesco stores throughout the United Kingdom.

This is a joint promotion between Tesco and the Thai Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) and was run in over 200 stores nationwide. A celebration event will take place on May 17th at the Tesco store in Kensington, Lon-don. A delegation of Tesco UK Directors, dignitaries from Thailand, members of the Department of International Trade Promo-tion of Thailand and invited guests from Tescos Thai business, Tesco Lotus, will

all be present for the occasion.

The promotion, which is in its fth consecu-tive year, has been just one way in which Tesco has been supporting the growth of exports from Thailand. This year the num-bers continue to grow with the value of Thai exports to the Tesco Group projected at 11.65 Billion Thai Baht. In particular exports of fruit to the Tesco group from Thailand are estimated to go up by 10%. These gures are a representation of the increasingly strong trade relationship that Tesco continues to forge with Thailand.

HE Poom Sarapol, the Thai Deputy Min-ister of Commerce was delighted that the promotion could take place again this year,

as he felt that it was a good example of the strong ties linking our two countries.

British companies are some of the EUs largest investors in Thailand and Tesco stands out as one of the most successful. As the market leader in the Thai grocery market, Tesco Lotus, an aliate of Tesco UK, has a strong presence in Thailand yet it also has an excellent track record of signicant investment, job creation and the introduction of environmentally friendly practices. Tescos work has greatly contributed to the increase in Thai agricultural exports to the UK and beyond.

    During the promotion period specialist

in store teams offered Tesco customers the opportunity to taste fresh exotic Thai produce including Thai mangoes, lychees, rambutan, and mangosteen. The aim of the promotion was to raise awareness of the variety of fresh exotic produce that Thailand has to offer, and show customers how each of the fruits should be prepared. Customers received an information leaet they could take home which contained details of each of the fruits on show and preparation guidelines.

Nuntawans Sakuntanaga, Director General Department of International Trade Promo-tion said It is wonderful to see such a strong cooperation and dedication for this event.

Tastes of Thailand provides us with a great opportunity to show British consum-ers the wonderful variety and exotic tastes of Thai fruits, such as Thai mangoes, lychees, rambutan, and mangoesteen. The aim of this promotion is to raise aware-ness of the variety of fresh exotic pro-duce that Thailand has to offer, and show customers how each of the fruits should be prepared.

Ian Hutchin, International Corporate Affairs Director at Tesco PLC felt the promotion was a tting way to introduce British con-sumers to the exotic produce that Thailand has to offer. Tastes of Thailand provides us with a great opportunity to show British consumers the wonderful variety and exotic tastes of Thai fruits, such as Thai mangoes, lychees, rambutan, and mangosteen . This years promotion has

taken place in 200 stores across the UK since 7 May 2012 and, we are delighted to say that, so far, the feedback from TESCOs customers on this promotion have been very positive.

Chulit Stavorn, Executive Director of Thai Trade Centre London, was delighted to be involved with co-ordinating the promotion once again.

This is the fth consecutive annual promotion to be organised by joint co-operation between Tesco and DITP. The event is an important contribution to our desire to increase Thai exports to the UK overall, and we are extremely proud of the work that has been carried out this year in order to bring together another successful promotion. amthai

obstacles to doing business in Thailand, as follows: Starting a business: Investment or conducting business in Thailand involves having to contact many government agen-cies, with multiple processing steps, which are individually time-consuming. Receiving credit: SMEs have credit access restrictions and nancial costs are still high because Thai nan-cial institutions have a certain monopoly level. Taxation: Thailands corporate tax rate of 30 percent is higher than that of its neighbours. However, if the govern-

ment reduces the corporate tax, this will be effective in attracting investment. 4) Higher business costs The wage rate in Thailand is increasing, while inves-tors are looking to invest in new places that have lower labour costs than China. Investment in the world is likely to ow into the new emerging economies, such as Indonesia, Myanmar, and elsewhere. In addition, the relative costs of energy, transportation and logistics is very high, associated with high global oil prices. Therefore, Thailand is likely to lose its investment attraction. 5) Political and administrative

problems The development of Thailands economy is slowing or sometimes restricted due to political and administrative prob-lems, such as political conicts, and the corruption of politicians and government ocers causing high hidden costs in the business sector, and the poor performance of government agencies, etc.

Given the above analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of Thailand, we may ques-tion whether Thailand is yet prepared to cope with the AEC. The answer seems to

be that we are not clear on our strategic position in the ASEAN arena. Our future direction has been forced by circumstances without planning or advance prepara-tion. Thailands preparatory measures for inclusion in the AEC are not yet concrete and this situation is worrisome for the country.

The next question is how Thailand should determine a strategy to cope with AEC inclusion. I will answer this question in my next article. amthai
