Amy Varin Hoppock’s book! n November 18, A.D. 2015: The Tooth, the Whole Tooth, and Nothing But the Tooth!!! ike Dettori, Fairfield District Ranger, outlined the purpose of the Salt Creek/Bowns Creek forest health project last Thursday in an open house at the Senior Center. Dettori and other USFS staff explained (using nearly 17,000 acres of maps) that the north side of the Soldier Peaks is a fuel-rich forest area untouched by the recent Beaver and Kelly fires with vegetation health problems caused by insect and disease infestations, posing significant risk for a severe fire. Aptly named USFS tree specialist John Pine explained that management options for the area might conceivably include fuels reduction cutting and extraction on particularly combustible spots, focused commercial timber sales, or prescribed burns (the last suggested by one public person attending, to the spirited objection of another!). Pine noted that this summer’s timber sale on the north flank of Cannonball Mountain went well, despite a subdued market for timber. Dettori and Pine explained that the study process is just beginning, with no action or schedule yet defined for the eventual project, which might ultimately run for several years of work. Smoky and the crew welcome public input throughout the process, and formal opportunities to comment will be posted. It’s bordered on the left by Boardman Creek, on the right by the road from Couch Summit to Big Smoky, and along the base by the northside ridge of the North Fork of Soldier Creek. The area generally includes the central northern slopes of the Soldier Peaks, dissected by the valleys of Salt Creek and Bowns Creek. Amy Varin wins 1st Place at Idaho Author Awards! A toast to Mrs. B! Go Amy! Amy Varin Hoppock, daughter of Cindy and Jack Varin and the author of Compelled by Love, won two prizes at the recent 2015 Idaho Author Awards: one for first place in the "Inspirational" category and the other for being in the top 10 nonfiction books (she was fourth). Amy is a proud graduate of Camas County High School and remembers fondly the lesson Ms. B (Margaret Brackenbury) taught her, both about writing and life. Compelled by Love tells how runners and walkers are changing the lives of children in India. The runners, including Amy, and walkers complete four half-marathons during the month of October and obtain pledges for the 52.4 miles they run or walk which are then sent to help fund orphanages in India that care for HIV orphans. By the way, notes proud papa Jack Varin, Compelled by Love is available on Amazon. ❦
