- E a9 3 members of this Society, and excellent judges of this fuba. M. Clairaut, fince our laIt meeting, has been fo kind as to tranfmst to me their anfwer; by which it does appear, that this is prepared from a plant, which is called by the botaniRs

' Agaricus pedis equini figur&. InJi. Rei. Herbar. " Fungus in caudicibus naScens) pedis equini figur&*

C. B. Pin. " Fungus durus arborum, five igniarius. Park. I2heat " Fungi arborei ad ellychnia. I. Bv {' Fungi igniarii Cifalpini et Tragi " Boletus acaulis pulvinatus lavis, poris tenuifl lmis.

Linn. Flor. Suec It xs the agaric employed for the amasloue; and

Mr. Brofl4art, who firI} brought this preparation into praftice, conceives, that that, which grovvs upon old oaks, which have been lopped, is the moIt valuabTe; that it Ihould be gathered in AuguR or Septem6er, and be kept in a dw room.

The way of preparing it i$ to take off wlth a knife the white and hard part} till you find a fu6- Itance fo foft, as to yield under the finger, like {ham- myleather. This is to be divided into pieces of different fizes and thicknefs: beat theSe with a ham_ mer, to give them a Rill greater degree of foftnefs,> fo that they may be eafily torn with the finger.

Mr. Morand thinks, that the agaric, which urhen growing is of a greyilB colour on the olltrlde, is bet- ter thaxl that which iS whste.
