Terms And Conditions Of Sale

1. All persons attending the sale under the conduct of the Auctioneers shall be deemed to be on the land and premises entirely at their own risk and shall have no claim against the Auctioneers in respect of cancellation/postponement of a sale or any loss, accident or injury, however occasioned.

2. All bids made should be treated as offers made upon these conditions of sale and all persons present are admitted to attend a sale on the basis that they have notice of these conditions. All persons intending to bid must register at the registration desk before the sale starts.

Non-compliance with this condition may delay the release of lots pending the clearance of cheques.

7. The Auctioneers will at the request of the Buyer store larger items at their premises at the Buyer’s risk. Items can be collected by prior arrangement.

8. The Auctioneers will execute commission bids, written or telephoned, free of charge. Postal bidders should use the form at the back of this catalogue. Commission bids will be executed as cheaply as possible having regard to any reserve and other postal bids or bids in the room. The auctioneers shall not, however, be responsible for any neglect or default in executing or failing to execute any commission bid.

Subject to condition 12, (a) Lots are sold with all faults and imperfections and neither the Seller nor the Auctioneer is responsible for any defects whatsoever; (b) no warranty is given or authorised to be given by the Seller or the Auctioneer with regard to any Lot other than that the Seller had the right to sell it; (c) any express or implied conditions or warranties, whether relating to description or quality, are hereby excluded.

MAIN AUCTIONThe main Auction will be in the Exhibition Hall and viewing will be from 7.30 a.m. The sale will start at 10.30 a.m. There will be a lunch break at Lot 300 for 30 minutes. Car parking on the site is restricted but there are a number of car parks within a short walking distance of the Centre.Please note not all items listed in the catalogue are photographed.

ALPHA LOTSThere will be a large Alpha lot section on the day. This will be held in the Viewing Room at the Crewe North Signal Box. Viewing for this sale will be from 8.00am until 12:30. Bids to be in by 12:30.

Lots will be sold to the highest bidder as determined by the Auctioneers on receipt of the special “Alpha Lot Bidding Slips” handed in by 12:30 on the day. The results of this Auction will be available at approx 3.30 p.m. and an announcement will be made in the Main Hall. All lots must be removed by 5.00 p.m. unless prior arrangements are made. We regret that Alpha lots are not available to poster bidders.

BUYERS PREMIUMPlease note there is a 10% Buyers Premium to be added to the Hammer Price in the main auction and the highest bid price in the Alpha Lot Auction.

FREE BUSThere will be a Free Vintage Routemaster Bus running to and from Crewe Railway Station and the Heritage Centre starting from 7.40am approx every 20 minutes for the duration of the day. The bus will break for lunch approx 40 mins at 12.40 to 1.10.

CAR PARKINGThe parking at the Heritage Centre will be for staff, Disabled Badge Holders and Trade Stands only on the day. There is parking within 10 minutes walk of the event site at the following Car Parks:

1 A BR(M) enamel Signal Box Name board “KINGMOOR” f/f, from the box that controlled the entrance in and out to Carlisle Kingmoor 12A Steam Shed. This board is in superb condition with only minor edge chipping. Size 38” x 10 ½”. A very special item!

2 A chromed brass Diesel Locomotive Works plate ”THE ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANY LTD No.2788/D 503 – 1960 THE VULCAN FOUNDRY LTD LOCOMOTIVE WORKS ENGLAND”. New as D266 to 64B Haymarket 21/3/194/1960 becoming 40066 in October 1973, it was withdrawn on 5/4/1981 & cut up at Swindon Works. The plate is in totally ex loco condition.

3 A cast iron Shed plate 82C Swindon 1950 to October 1964. The plate is in ex loco condition.

4 A London & North Eastern Railway enamel Station Lamp Tablet “ABERLOUR” a Station on the Craigellachie to Boat Of Garten Route, the line closed in 1965. In very good condition. Size 16” x 5 ¼”.

5 A (North Eastern Railway) enamel Station Door plate “LADIES ROOM” in brown & cream with ornate ends, some minor chipping otherwise in very good condition.

6 A brass Locomotive Diamond Works plate “NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY LTD GLASGOW No.25318 – 1944” EX wd 2-10-0 90046 NEW March 1944 as LNER 63046, later 90046 in January 1949 to Woodford then Westhouses, Toton & finally Gorton. It was withdrawn in March 1963 & cut up at Crewe Works in June 1963. the plate is in ex loco condition.

7 A framed & glazed Carriage Print “LITTLE MORETON HALL, CONGLETON, CHESHIRE” by Ronald Lampitt from the London Midland Region series. In very good condition.

8 A brass Locomotive Works plate “LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY DARLINGTON WORKS 1920” with brass over plate strip “61410” ex LNER B16 Class 61410. Allocations include Neville Hill & York, it was withdrawn in August 1960 & scrapped at Darlington Works in October 1960. The plate is in face restored only condition.

9 A (Great Central Railway) cast iron Signal Finial in restored condition.

10 A London & North Eastern Railway cast iron Seat Back “GORTON & OPENSHAW” a Rare Seat Back only ever been in auction once in 2004!

11 A Pictorial enamel Advertising sign “TOWER TEA EVERY PACKET SIGEND & SEALED GREAT TOWER ST TEA COMPANY” with picture of the Tower etc. With some restoration otherwise in good condition. Size 39” x 14 ½”.

13 A cast iron Shed plate 71H Templecombe 1950 to February 1958. The plate is in ex loco condition with a clear BR(S) triangle to the rear.

14 A Cambrian Railways Station Wall Lamp with Name Tablet “FAIRBOURNE”, the lamp is also brass plated “CAM-RYS” on the chimney & on the original reservoir and it is complete with its brandy glass globe marked “GWR No.1”. The lamp is in very good restored some time ago condition. Note; Fairbourne is on the Cambrian Coast Line between Barmouth & Towyn.

15 A brass engraved Locomotive Works plate “No.61373 – 1950” ex BR (LNER) Thompson B1 4-6-0 new NBL Works No.26842 December 1950, depots include Immingham & Darnall. It was withdrawn in September 1962 & cut up in January 1964 by Albert Loom at Spondon, Derby. The plate is in lightly polished condition on the front the back is in ex loco condition.

16 A Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway pegging Block Instrument brass plated “DOWN LINE” and the top of the case inside “MS&LR”. In very good condition. A Scarce Instrument!

17 A London & North Western Railway cast iron Tender plate “L&NWR No.1614”. The plate is in restored some time ago condition.

18 A Great Western Railway large brass Locomotive Pressure Gauge with silvered dial engraved “GWR” and red arrow at 225LB, the case is also marked “GWR. A Superb Example!

19 A cast iron sign “MIDLAND RAILWAY. ENGINEER’S DEPARTMENT. FIRE BUCKETS. THESE BUCKETS MUST ONLY BE USED IN CASE OF FIRE, & MUST BE KEPT FULL OF CLEAN WATER BY THE LENGTH GANGER”. This sign is in face restored only condition.

20 A hand built 5” Gauge Midland Railway Drop Sided Sleeper Wagon in grey with white lettering & is complete with a load of Railway Sleepers & Chairs, complete with carrying box. A Superb Model!

21 A BR(M) enamel Station sign “FIRST CLASS ALSO SEASON & PRIVILEGE TICKETS” f/f with a couple of minor face chip repairs otherwise excellent deep colour & shine. Size 18” x 12”.

24 A brass Locomotive Works plate “BEYER PEACOCK & Co Ltd 6973 built MANCHESTER 1940”. Ex Kenya & Uganda Railways 4-8-4 + 4-8-4 EC3 Class Beyer Garratt Locomotive number 86. Later East African Railways 57 Class numbered 5710 and named BUDAMA. The plate is in ex loco condition. Size 18” x 8½”.

25 An enamel Lorry Warning sign “CAUTION TO RIDE OR HANG ON THE BACK OF THIS VEHICLE IS DANGEROUS AND STRICTLY FORBIDDEN” red on white with very minor face & edge chipping otherwise in excellent condition. Size 12” diameter.

25A An LNWR full title with Coat of Arms Tea plate by Minton’s with decorative border consisting of Flowers, Leaves & Garlands. In very good condition.

26 A brass Locomotive Works plate “ANDREW BARCLAY SONS & Co. LIMITED CALEDONIA WORKS KILMARNOCK No.1628 – 1919” ex 0-4-0 ST with 14 x 22 outside cylinders. The loco did not stray far from its birth place as delivered new to Kilmarnock Gas Works. It was scrapped around 1964 when the Gas Works closed. In face restored only condition.

27 A BR(W) wooden Station Finger Board “ACOCKS GREEN AND ALL STATIONS TO LAPWORTH” double sided with feathered arrow. In very good condition.

28 A Great Western Railway cast iron Loco Tool Box with wooden seat on top. In restored condition. This is believed to be from a GWR Pannier Tank. Ideal to go back on a Loco or Traction Engine!

29 A cast iron sign “GCR END OF GCRy MAINTENANCE”. In face restored condition.

30 A BR(M) small wooden, double sided Carriage Board “HELLIFIELD – BLACKBURN” in maroon & straw paint. This service was discontinued in 1962. In good ex service condition. Size 32” x 3 ¼”.

31 A Pictorial enamel Advertising sign “RUB AWAY COLDS with VICK BRAND VAPOUR-RUB” showing children. Some edge & face chipping/rusting otherwise in good condition.

32 A cast iron double sided early post mounted Finger Board “LISKEARD STA 1 ¾”. In very good unrestored condition.

33 A BR(M) enamel Station sign unflanged “TO PLATFORM 4” with feathered arrow. This sign was located at the top of the stairs leading from the underpass up to Platform 4 at Stockport Edgeley Station. A Very Unusual small sign with some minor edge chipping otherwise in excellent condition. Size 7” x 18”.

35 A BR( M) enamel station Totem sign “ULVERSTON” f/f. Originally constructed by the Ulverston & Lancaster Railway & subsequently part of the Furness system. In good condition although it has a general loss of shine.

36 A London & North Western Railway block Instrument. In excellent ex box condition.

37 A brass Locomotive Works plate “THE VULCAN FOUNDRY (LIMITED) NEWTON-LE-WILLOWS LANCASHIRE No.6253 – 1955” ex East African Railways 2-8-4 type locomotive built to operate in Kenya & Uganda, these were the last built Steam Locomotives for the East African Railways. The plate is in face cleaned condition the back is in ex loco condition and mounted on a polished wooden mount with a photograph of the Engine & details etc. This plate is being sold on behalf of the “71000” Trust.

38 A London & North Eastern Railway brass Locomotive Whistle & Valve from a K3 Class 2-6-0 locomotive. In good polished condition.

39 A cast iron sign “S&DJR BEWARE OF TRAINS” in restored some time ago condition with a clear post mark to the rear.

40 A cast iron Signal Box Door Notice “GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY NO UNAUTHORIZED PERSON ALLOWED IN THIS BOX BY ORDER”. The plate is in good, unrestored ex Box condition.

41 An LMS enamel Station Running-In-Board “ROMAN BRIDGE” a station on the line from Llandudno Jct to Blaneau Festiniog. Size 48” x 26”. The board is in superb condition, a Rare Survivor from this line!

42 An LMS Hotels cream ware Crescent Salad Dish Seahorse pattern. This pattern was used at the Morecambe & Kyle Hotels. This has a tiny chip to the rear otherwise in good condition

43 A cast iron Shed plate 8B Warrington Dallam 1948 to November 1964. The plate is in ex loco condition.

44 A London Brighton & South Coast Railway wooden First Aid Box, the front lettered “LBSC No. 52 EMERGENCY BOX”. In very good ex service condition complete with contents etc.

45 A BR (E) enamel Doorplate “STATION MASTER”, unflanged with some screw hole chips repaired otherwise good deep colour & shine. Condition. Size 18” x 6”.

46 A brass Locomotive Works plate “BEYER PEACOCK & CO LTD REBUILT 1920 MANCHESTER” carried by SE&CR 4-4-0 E Class Locomotive, built 1907 & numbered 497, later 31497 rebuilt to an E Class by Beyer Peacock with works number 01872. In face restored some time ago condition, the back is in ex loco condition. Size 10” x 5 ¾ “.

48 A Presentation Crest comprising of an alloy Lion & Wheel mounted on a backboard and sign written “BRITISH RAIL ENGINEERING LIMITED CREWE LOCOMOTIVE WORKS”. A superb local item presented to Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council as a token of the close links between the Town & the Railway Works for 140 years. In very good condition.

49 A cast iron Trespass sign “MIDLAND & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY Co.” with eleven lines of text & dated “JUNE 1899”. In unrestored condition.

50 A Great Western Railway cast iron Cabside “3727” ex GWR 0-6-0 PT new Swindon June 1937 & allocated to Southall, Rydyr & Barry. It was withdrawn in April 1964 & cut up at Woodhams, Barry in March 1965. The plate is in face restored condition.

50A A Floral Dinner plate marked “LMS HOTELS” in very good condition.

51 A BR(E) enamel Station Frontage Board “BRITISH RAILWAYS LINCOLN CENTRAL” unflanged with minor face & edge chipping otherwise good deep colour & shine. In two sections, sizes 54” x 48” & 49” x 48”.

52 A Great Northern Railway large Somersault Signal Lamp brass plated “GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY No.26325” & “BRAMLEY” & “OUTER HOME BRANCH” complete with correct interior in restored some time ago condition.

53 A cast iron Shed plate 89B Breacon 1950 to November 1959. The plate is in restored some time ago condition.

54 A BR( M) enamel Station Totem sign “KENTS BANK” f/f originally the start of the route across Morecambe Bay Sands before the coming of the Railway in 1857. In excellent condition with good colour & shine although it appears to have been over varnished.

55 An LMS cast iron Locomotive Tender plate “LMS 10163 – 1943” ex LMS 2-8-0 8F Class Locomotive 48436. The locomotive was cut up in 1968. The plate is in totally ex loco condition & comes with its BR receipt.

56 An alloy Road sign “CROSSING NO GATES” showing outline of a Steam Locomotive with glass beading. In good ex road side condition.

59 A cast iron sign “CAMBRIAN RAILWAYS NOTICE ANY PERSON FOUND TRESPASSING ON THIS RAILWAY WILL BE PROSECUTRED BY ORDER”. In unrestored condition.

60 A Locomotive Smoke Box plate “44860” ex LMS Stanier Black 5 new Crewe Works as 4860 in December 1944 & renumbered to 44860 in October 1949, allocations include Llandudno Junction & Stoke it was withdrawn in January 1967 & cut up at Cohen’s, Kettering in April 1968. In face restored only condition.

61 A Pictorial enamel Advertising sign “ASK US FOR ROWNTREE’S ELECT COCOA MAKERS TO T.M. THE KING & QUEEN (with Coat of Arms) IT HAS THE ROWNTREE FLAVOUR”. This has some edge & face chipping otherwise good deep colour & shine. Size 21” x 14”.

62 A North British Railway Bullpitts Patent Hand Lamp clearly stamped “NBR No.1974 – S LETHAM GRANGE” & plated “BULLPITT & Co. BIRMINGHAM 1906”. In unrestored condition with original reservoir & burner.

63 A cast iron Shed plate 87F Llanelly 1950 to October 1965. The plate is in ex loco condition.

64 A North Staffordshire Railway 12” Fuse Wall Clock, the original face marked “NSRy Co. T ARMSTRONG & BRO MANCHESTER”. In very good working order complete with pendulum & key. A Scarce Clock from this Company!

65 A brass Industrial Locomotive Name plate “CHARLES” ex Hudswell Clarke No. D765 of 1951, a 0-6-0 DM Locomotive No.1 it worked at Normanby Park Steel Works at Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire. The plate is in very good ex loco condition.

66 A BR(E) enamel Station Door plate “PARCELS AND LEFT LUGGAGE” unflanged with minor edge chipping otherwise in very good condition. Size 18” x 6”.

67 A brass Locomotive Works plate “BEYER PEACOCK & CO. LTD No.7571 BUILT MANCHESTER 1954” carried by the 4-8-2 + 2-8-4 East African Railways 60 Class or Governor Class Beyer Garratt Locomotive number 6007 & named Sir Mark Young. Built under the Beyer Peacock & Co. Ltd sub-contract order number 11167 by Societe Fraco-belge in Raismes, France under their works number 2989. The plate is in face restored some time ago condition, the back is in ex loco condition. Size 13 ½” x 6 ½”.

270 An LMS alloy Hawkseye Station sign “ST. WINEFRIDES” from the only intermediate Halt on the short branch from Holywell Junction to Holywell Town built by the LNWR in 1912 & closed to passengers in 1954 & to traffic in 1957. The line with a gradient of 1 in 27 was the steepest adhesion worked passenger carrying line in the country. This sign is in unrestored ex Station condition. A Very Rare Survivor!

271 An alloy Diesel Name plate “RES GESTAE” ex 47 524 named at Didcot Railway Centre23/9/95. The plate retains its original rivets & is in ex Loco condition.

Renumbered to 20 055 in January 1971 & withdrawn on 23/7/1993 & scrapped on the 27/3/1995. In totally ex loco condition.

284 A Virgin Voyager cast alloy Nose Cone Badge carried by the Virgin Voyager 4 Car Set numbered 220008 and named Welsh Dragon. The badge was carried on the lead coach number 60308. The set is now part of the Cross County Fleet. In ex loco condition. Size 10”.

285 A Virgin Super Voyager alloy Name plate “SUPER VOYAGER CAPTAIN JOHN SMITH” as carried by the Super Voyager 5 Car Set built by Bombardier & numbered 221128 now part of the Cross Country Fleet. John Smith born in 1580 was an English Explorer who helped set up the first colony in America at Jamestown in Virginia & explored the American East Coast. The plate is in excellent ex loco condition & the back is stamped “S.V 0311”. Size 34 ¼” x 22 ½”.

286 A brass Locomotive Works plate “NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE Co.27498 – 1955” from an East African Railways & Harbour Board Class 83 Diesel Electric with Paxman engine built mainly for freight duties. The plate is in ex loco condition. Size 13 ¾” x 5 ½”.

287 A brass oval Locomotive Works plate “BRE-METRO LTD BUILT BREL SWINDON 9019 – 1979” as carried by the 525 0-8-0 Diesel Hydraulic Locomotive built at Swindon Works for Kenya Railways with KR number 4719 to a design by Hunslet. This plate is from one of the last Loco’s built at Swindon Works before closure. In ex loco condition. Size 11 ½” x 8”.

288 A cast iron Locomotive Works plate “BUILT 1957 DERBY” ex Class 08, 08 297. In totally ex loco condition.

290 A Great Western Railway cast iron Signal Box Name Board “MARAZION SIGNALBOX” the first station out of Penzance, this station was also home to a number of Pullman Coaches. The board is in original chocolate & cream paintwork, there is a hairline crack in this board but it does not detract from this very special item!

298 A Locomotive Smoke Box Number plate “45300” ex LMS Black 5 always a Crewe locomotive at either 5A or 5B apart from a short period 1963 to 1965 when it was at Holyhead, withdrawn in December 1965. The plate is in totally ex loco condition and comes with photograph of this on the Locomotive.

300 A brass Locomotive Name plate “CITY OF MANCHESTER” ex Great Central Railway Robinson 4-6-0 B19 new from Gorton Works as GCR 425 & later 5425 & LNER 1491. A Class of just 6 engines originally B2 Class under GCR they were reclassified B19 in 1946. It’s last shed was Immingham where it was withdrawn in July 1947 & cut up at Gorton Works in August 1947. The plate is in face restored some time ago condition & the plate retains its ears. A Very Special Name plate!

477 A Beyer Peacock Smoke Box petticoat circular tapering wooden Foundry Pattern. This was constructed in the Gorton pattern shop in 1939 for a batch of 7 Gold Coast Railway 4-6-2 3ft 6in Gauge Tender Locomotives to Beyer Peacock order number 1538 with Loco Works No.6911 to 6917. Stamped on the large diameter edge is 1538 (the order number) and DG11642613 (the drawing number). The petticoat was fitted in the smoke box and below the chimney base to take away the exhaust gases. This was rescued from the bonfire at Gorton in 1966. Size 28” diameter to 15” diameter & 13” high.
