Hydnocarpus laurifolia-t'j/s_
An evergreen deciduous tree up to 15.2 mt. or more in height, with fluted stem. Bark rough, brown, wood whitish but generally turns brownish-grey due to fungal sap-stain and becomes streaked. Leaves oblong, ovate or elliptic, some what serrate, 10.2-15.4 cm. long. Flower small, solitary or borne in fascicles, greenish-white. Fruit globose, mammilate, tomentose, 5.1-10.2 cm. in diameter. Seeds 15-20, striate, sub-ovoid, obtusely angular, 2-2.5 cm long.

Botanical description:-
Common in the tropical forests of western ghats from konkan south wards. Also in lanka.
Major chemical constituents:-Seeds & seed hulls contains hypnocarpic,
chaulmoogric and its homologues, gorlic, oleic and palmitic acids; hydnocarpin & methoxy hydnocarpin.etc.
The stem bark and leaves containt riterpenes, acelylbetulinic, betulinic,ursolic and acetylursolic acids.

Ayurvedic Pharmacology of Tuvrak(Guna):-
Effect on Doshas : - Kaph-vatt samak. Systemic: External: kusthghna, kandughna, jantughna,
vransodhan, vranropan, raktoklesak, lekhan. Internal: NS: bednasthapan. DS: vamak, rechak, krimighna. CS: Raktprasadan. RS: kaphaghna. US: pramehghna. Skin: kusthghna.
Actions (Karma)
It is used mainly in skin diseases, kustha, kandu, nadi vran, gandmala, asthivran, aamvatt, raktvatt, raktbikar, krimi rog,
Used as a substitute for Centella asiatica, as a bloodpurifier (in cutaneous diseases);for indigestion, dysentery and nervousness.etc.
Classical therapeutic uses:-
Netra rog: Pulp of tuvrak fruit, rock salt & srotanjan are made as coal by antar dhoom process first, then the tuvrak oil is mixed with it & applied as eye ointment in pillarog, naktandhya & timir rog.(su.ci.13)
Rasayan: Tuvrak oil is used as rasayan in kustha rogi.(AH.Ci.19)
Indication/Uses:-
Dosage:- Seeds powder 3-6 gm.
Seeds oil 10 ml. for vaman & birechan. 5-10 drop. for sansaman and can be induced gradualy upto 30-60 drop. Anupan should be as butter, ghee.
Important preparation:- Tuvrakadi tail, tuvrak tail, tuvrak lep, tuvrakaasthi vatak.
Parts used:- Seeds, seed oil.
