INTRODUCTION

This map report is one of a series of geologic and hydrologic maps forStates in the Basin and Range Province. These map reports contain detailedinformation on subjects including ground-water hydrology, ground-waterquality, surface distribution of selected rock types, data bearing on tectonicconditions, areal geophysical data, Pleistocene hydrologic features, andnatural resources. These compilations of geologic and hydrologic informationare the basis for a summary report on the Basin and Range which characterizethe geology and hydrology of the Basin and Range Province. The geologic andhydrologic information will be used to evaluate the Province for prospectiveregions for further study relative to isolation of high-level radioactivewaste. This work is a part of the U.S. Geological Survey's program forgeologic and hydrologic evaluation of broad physiographic provinces toidentify potentially suitable environments for storage of high-level nuclearwaste (Bedinger, Sargent, and Schneider, 1981).

The need for an improved catalog of seismicity for hazard assessment inthe United States has become increasingly apparent since the publication, in1976, of a probabilistic hazard map of the United States (Algermissen andPerkins, 1976). As part of the probabilistic hazard and risk assessmenteffort in the U.S. Geological Survey there has been a continuing effort toupdate and improve basic seismicity data for a number of years. In addition, there has recently been an increased research and compilation effort in anumber of other research groups and agencies aimed at improving regionalearthquake catalogs in the United States, and we are much indebted to a numberof workers who have made their revised regional catalogs available to us.

The need for the location of suitable areas for the disposal of nuclearwaste has made improved earthquake catalogs especially important. The catalogof earthquakes in the Basin and Range province provided in this publication ispart of this effort.

This catalog is a compilation of 470 events in the Basin and Rangeprovince with magnitude (Ms) of 5.0 or greater, in the time interval 1803through 1977. For each event, data are included that give the date and origintime; the epicenter and depth; a rating of the quality of the hypocentraldata; the maximum Modified Mercalli intensity; and from one to three reportedor computed magnitudes. An Ms magnitude is included for each event, and whenavailable M and b values are also included. An epicenter plot of theseevents is contained in plate 1.

SOURCES OF DATA

This catalog was compiled from three principal sources: 1) from acatalog of Utah earthquakes prepared by the University of Utah (Arabasz andothers, 1979); 2) from catalogs published by the California Division of Minesand Geology (Real and others, 1978; Toppozada and others, 1980); and 3) fromunpublished seismicity data files compiled by Algermissen. In all cases, theprimary source was compared with other sources to check for significantdiscrepancies in the data and to detect duplicates or omissions. Because ofthe number of events in the California catalog, only events prior to 1900 andevents after 1900 greater than magnitude 5.0 were analyzed.

All large shocks were given individual consideration. Large generallyrefers to events greater than magnitude 7.0 in California and Nevada andmagnitude 6.0 elsewhere. Intensities and magnitudes were reconsidered basedon all available information, including the distribution of intensities.Epicenters of large shocks have been located on faults if the faults on whichthe events occurred were known. All events along the Wasatch Fault were givenspecial attention in order to determine the size of the event and whether itoccurred on the Wasatch Fault or in an adjacent zone. If this processresulted in reassignment of locations or intensities, this data is given areference code of 'ASG' in the appendix.

DESCRIPTION OF THE CATALOG

Geographical BoundariesThis catalog covers the Basin and Range province as defined by Fenneman's

(1946) map. The province is labeled 22a through 22e by Fenneman, and for thiswork, is assumed to terminate at the U.S. border. This province boundary isshown in figure 1. The actual catalog covers a slightly larger area thanshown in figure 1 in order to include events outside the province boundarywhich have a significant effect on the hazard within the boundary. Thissecond boundary (also shown in figure 1) is simplified into segments followinglatitude and longitude lines. The coordinates defining these segments aregiven in table 1.

Nevada Test SiteAt the Nevada Test Site, events were deleted from the catalog if they

could be identified as explosions or aftershocks of explosions. Rogers andothers (1976) have published a catalog of events at the Test Site with knownnuclear explosions deleted. Through 1974, any events which were not listed byRogers in his catalog of the area were assumed to be explosions or theiraftershocks. After 1974, it is likely that some of these events remain in thecatalog.

Hypocenter Quality FactorThe catalog includes a quality rating for the hypocenter of each event.

The hypocenter quality has been estimated by analyzing the reports availablefor the event. For earlier events, particularly pre-instrumental events, thedata are not as good, and these estimates are less reliable. References takenfrom the California Division of Mines and Geology catalog contained qualityfactors assigned by California Institute of Technology (CIT) as described byReal and others (1978). The CIT quality factors were converted to the onesused here according to the following table:

Table 2 gives a description of the codes used in this catalog.

MagnitudesThe magnitudes available for the catalog are from a variety of sources.

A local ML scale has been used in Utah since 1962. The development of thisscale is described by Griscom and Arabasz (1979). The ML used in Utah isbelieved to be approximately equal to the original ML developed in Californiaby Richter (1958) but this has not been proven rigorously. Magnitudes inNevada are generally Ms for the larger shocks although some mb and MLmagnitudes are also given and identified as such. For California, ML isusually given for earthquakes up to about 6.75. Ms is normally given forlarger earthquakes. For earthquakes outside of California prior to about1960, instrumental magnitudes are generally available for the largerearthquakes and are taken principally from Gutenberg and Richter (1965) or thestation bulletins of the California Institute of Technology or the Universityof California at Berkeley. For earthquakes for which no magnitudes have beencomputed, magnitudes are estimated using ML = I + 2/3 Io (Gutenberg andRichter, 1956). The magnitude conversions used are listed in table 6.

FormatA description of the data, which is listed for all events in Appendix A,

follows. Titles abbreviated in Appendix A are shown in parentheses. Table 3is a summary of the format and defines the column position of each item ofdata.

Number -- identifying number uniquely assigned to each earthquake. Numbersless than 100000 indicate the maximum intensity is less then V. Numbersgreater than or equal to 100000 indicate the maximum intensity is greaterthan or equal to V.

State (ST) -- two-letter code identifying the state where the earthquake waslocated. See list of codes in table 4.

Date -- date of occurrence, Greenwich time, shown as year, month, day. Zeroesfor the month or day indicate that information is not known.

Time -- time of occurrence, Greenwich time. The time is listed to the nearesttenth of a second, but this does not indicate the accuracy. Accuracyvaries and is undetermined.

Latitude, longitude (LAT, LONG) -- coordinates of the epicenter, listed tohundredths of a degree, but not necessarily reported with thataccuracy. West longitudes are listed as negative values.

Depth (DEP) - focal depth in kilometers, given to the nearest kilometer. Ifthe depth is unknown, the value listed identifies a general range asfollows:

990-shallow, 0-70 km880-intermediate, 71-200 km770-deep, 201-700 km999-range undetermined

In the Basin and Range, all depths are shallow. If a negative value wasreported in a source, it was assigned a value of zero.

Quality factor (Q) -- a single letter code indicating the approximate accuracyof the hypocenter. See table 2 for listing of codes.

Reference (REF) -- three character code identifying the primary source of thehypocenter, date, and time listed. See table 5 for listing ofreferences.

Intensity (I) -- maximum intensity of the earthquake on the Modified Mercalliscale. Rossi-Forel intensities were converted to the MM scale usingRichter, (1958, p. 651). Where a Rossi-Forel value had 2 possibleconversions, reported effects were examined to determine the valueused. If a value was computed from a magnitude and resulted in anintensity less than one, a value of one was assigned.

Page 11: An Earthquake Catalog for The Basin and Range Province ... · of earthquakes in the Basin and Range province provided in this publication is part of this effort. This catalog is

Reference (REF) -- 3 character code (table 5) referencing the source for theintensity listed. A code beginning with * indicates the intensity wasconverted from a magnitude. The next character is a letter codeindicating the relationship used for the conversion. (See table 6). Thethird character indicates from which column the magnitude was taken forconversion.

Magnitudes -- space is provided to report three magnitudes: Ms, ML, and mb.An Ms magnitude, which may be either reported or computed from anothermagnitude, is always included. Values are listed to the nearest tenth.A four-character reference code follows each magnitude. The first partof this code consists of two letters indicating the source reporting themagnitude or the method of computation. (See table 7 for sourcecodes). A * in the first position indicates the magnitude was computedfrom the maximum intensity; a $ indicates it was converted from anothermagnitude. In both cases the second character indicates the relationshipused as listed in table 4. The second part of the code is two digitsdefining the type as shown in table 8. Magnitudes reported by Pasadena(PS), Berkeley (BK), Reno (RN), and the California Department of WaterResources (CW) were assigned a type of ML (code 01) if the magnitude wasless than 6.75 and a type of Ms (code 10) otherwise. Any magnitude whichwas less than 0.1 was assigned a value of 0.1.
