An earthquake is when the rocks beneath the surface begin to move and the earth then begins to shake.
An earthquake happens when the tectonic plates rub together. When the plates rub together It causes the ground to shake.
The Indian ocean earthquake on December 26th 2004 was as powerful as 4 million Hiroshima bombs.
The Richter scale measure earthquakes and sees how big it is.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER AN
EARTHQUAKE
After an earthquake a tsunami can occur. A tsunami is when a huge wave comes from sea and covers the land. This often kills many people and destroys buildings.
When an earthquake finishes the ground shakes a bit and that is called an after shock.
Recent earthquakes
On 12th January 2010 there was an earthquake in Haiti. It was reported that between 217,000 and 230,000 people died.
On 27th February 2010 there was an earthquake in Chile. This earthquake caused a Tsunami and even Australia was warned about rough sea because of the earthquake.
