An essay on the great ways to study
Several academic researches convey that the primary reason that lies behind the failure of a
lot of students to get better outcome while at college is the deficiency in the pertinent ways to study.
Based on this fact, this essay is going to elucidate the best ways students at college should
implement while studying. Some of the main skills, this essay will tackle, have to do with summary,
reading in layers, outlining, 2 – 6 – 0 method, reducing and highlighting in the end.
On the one hand, it is not advisable to ignore reading the summary chapters when they are
included in the books. Many readers choose to give the cold shoulder to such chapters on the ground
that they are repetitive in that they only recycle the main ideas already thoroughly illustrated and
they do not tackle new ideas. On the contrary, reading the summary is of much benefit to students as
they contain roughly 90% of the main ideas that will come in the exam, which is to say if you read the
summary twice, the ideas will stick to your mind. To further explain, you had better take the
summary and try to blank out the words and/or important ideas. Then make four or five copies of it
and each time you want to test yourself, take one of the copies and give it a try. This eventually will
help you compete against yourself and build up confidence. In addition to summary, reading in
layers is another effective reading style of interest. While reading in layers, keep in mind three
things: read the first sentence of each paragraph, read any sentence with a bold printed word and
read any sentence that seems important. How good is that? It helps you have a general idea of the
chapter in that you have an overview of what’s going in the book. It is worth-mentioning that this
method doesn’t necessarily work with all textbooks.
On the other hand, one way effective way of getting the ideas beautifully stuck into your
memory is to outline them. While outlining, keep in mind that you single out the fundamental ideas
and try to sort them into the key words in order that they will be easy to learn and remember. This
method does not work with all textbooks, the long ones in particular. The fourth reading style
concerns 2 – 1 – 0 method and it means that readers should read each heading and stop as they
reach the next one. Instead of continuing, go back to the ideas under the first heading and see to
what extent you can recall the ideas and while doing this, try to score your result. How can you do
that? If you managed to remember the main ideas without hesitation, give yourself 2, and if you can
remember just the half of the information, give yourself 1 and 0 if your ability to memories is terrible.
The effectiveness of this method embodied in that while you persistently attempt to get the score 2,
you compete against yourself and ideas are being stuck to your brain.
Lastly, reducing along with highlighting and flashcards is another different style that should be
utilized while reading a text. The best way to do this is to first read a part of the textbook or a
chapter and try to shrink it down on the notebook using your own words. This is good as it makes it
easy to read and learn, and it efficiently works with definitions; instead of reading a dense piece of
writing full of definitions which you are required to learn by heart, it would be great to sort them into
an outline and become easy to grasp and stick into the brain. Another effective strategy that roughly
90% of students wrongly adopt is highlighting; most students, while highlighting, just add colors to
their textbooks. The best way to use it is that students should not highlight while reading. In other
words, put the highlighter down and read first a chapter (or two pages of it) and then go back to
highlight the main ideas or words of your interest. Highlighting saves time when you go back to the
chapter. In addition to reducing and highlighting, flash cards are also very useful to stick definition
into our mind.
Basically, the key conclusion that we can draw from the above expository essay is that there
are some strategies to adopt while studying at collage which are summary, reading in layers,
outlining, 2 – 1 – 0 method, reducing , highlighting and flash cards in the end. Students should be
equipped with all these methods and use them properly while studying.
