Excursions to Harmony Day activities in Mirrabooka, the Sculptures by the Sea along with PEAC courses, Ride2School Day, Kite Day and yesterday we saw the visiting Japanese Students joining in with our Japanese classes. It is important to remember that being late three times to school will impact on a student’s eligibility to participate in the next upcoming incursion or excursion. Being often late to school signals a lack of care for learning and respect for the class and the learning program. Formal cultural or religious activity or authorised vacations are reasonable explanations for absence. 3 unexplained or unreasonable explanations will also impact on your child’s eligibility for the next incursion or excursion. It is insufficient to simply state the child was away. Sickness, if of a temporary nature, should be described either in an email or note to the teacher. Please use the SMS text feature 0418 949 529 or email to [email protected] . If the sickness is ongoing, please provide evidence of your medical certificate. In the case of vacations taken during term, it is the school’s prerogative to ‘authorise’ a vacation. This means that if you write to the school (Attention Principal) at the email or address above describing your intended vacation’s educational aspects, the school can endorse the vacation’s as an excellent opportunity to learn and grow. No work program will be provided. Attendance and Punctuality has improved further this term and we will be handing out certificates for 95% and Above Attendance later in the week. Across the board our school is growing and learning, with Pre Primary students exhibiting writing and reading skills, middle years students showing increasing propensity to complete nightly reading and homework and our senior students demonstrating leadership, responsible behaviours and strong growth toward their first semester reports. We need to continue building this work together. May I wish all staff, students and the community a well-deserved 2 week break. For those adults interested in promoting their own personal fitness Mr Kevin Buckley will be starting up a Personal Fitness Boot Camp on our oval early in the mornings. Sign-up sheets for a free 1 week trial are in the front office. Rest, recuperate and we’ll do it all again next term. Kim Pitts-Hill Principal Community Newsletter Issue 4 Wednesday, 1 st April

From the Deputy Principal Harmony Day Our Year 6 class is to be applauded for their outstanding work last Tuesday running Harmony Day activities. I’m sure everyone would agree the students gave clear and concise explanations of the games as well as providing a safe and fun experience at every station. I’m, not sure we’re ready for the Kabbadi championships of India or the Tinikling challenges of the Philippines, but we’re well on our way! Thank you to all the parents that came along to celebrate Harmony Day with us.

Year 6 Rottnest Camp Mrs Burrell, Mr Walker and myself had the pleasure of travelling on and around Rottnest last week with the Year 6 class. Our adventures included the Eco-Express Adventure Tour where we saw sea lions, dolphins, New Zealand fur seals and albatrosses as well as many other birds. We thoroughly enjoyed our charter on the Capella. The snorkelling, kayaking and noodling were amazing experiences for all. We cheated a small amount and took the train up to Oliver Hill where we were shown the WW2 guns and tunnels. In addition, we enjoyed riding our bikes, playing on the beach, swimming and exploring. We almost brought home some additional students of the marsupial kind, but were able to convince our Quokka friends to remain on Rottnest Island and not come home with us. Thank you to all students for your outstanding behaviour. It was a pleasure to spend 3 days together. Wheelchair for Kids Dress Up Every term our student council facilitates a dress up fundraiser to raise money for the Wheelchair for Kids charity. This term’s theme is ‘Crazy Socks. Students are invited to wear their CRAZY SOCKS on Thursday and bring along a gold coin donation to assembly. Please see Holly Whalans’ piece below.

Dress up Day – Wheelchair for Kids – Thursday 2nd April For this term‟s Dress Up, the theme is “CRAZY SOCKS”. Please bring some crazy socks when you come to school. Make sure you wear your school uniform as well. On this crazy day, please bring a gold coin donation for wheelchair for kids. In addition to this dress up, we are asking you to donate a pair of normal socks to Vanuatu, which was devastatingly hit by a cyclone. This dress up is being held on Thursday 2

nd April. We hope to see you in your

most craziest socks EVER! – Holly Whalan EduDance Concert Our EduDance Concert is on today, Wednesday, 1

st April commencing at 2pm. Parents and carers are invited to join

us in the undercover area to watch our movers and groovers. The P&C will be running a cake stall and selling Eater Raffle tickets before the concert. Please support our P&C generously. Faction Reward We will announce the winning faction of Term 1 2015 at assembly on Thursday with the faction reward occurring at 10:40am. It has been a tight competition this term. Attendance I am elated to have run down the school supplies of parchment paper this week printing off our Attendance Certificates for Term 1 2015. More than 75% of our students from Kindy – Year 6 will receive a certificate on Thursday with attendance above 95%. This is a significant improvement on 2014. Well done students and thank you parents for helping your children achieve this. Sandra Barnes Deputy

Community Garden As you all can see our Community Gardens have been complete and are ready for planting. Each garden bed has been allocated to a classroom except for the TALL CREAM ONE which has been designated for the Community to plant. Please feel free to plant and tend to the garden bed for all to see and share. Pictured here are our Pre-Primary students from Room 3/4. They have been busy planting and observing their plants. Take a look when you are at school next. We are also looking for a parent or community member to manage and maintain these garden beds. If you think you are able to fill this role, or know of someone that would like to, please let the front office know of your interest. We look forward to seeing this area turn into a thriving garden for all to appreciate. With your help we can make this happen.

History News Behind the scenes we are making our Anzac day preparations and each class has prepared an Aussie Flat Stanley to send on an adventure to various defence units around Australia. We hope to receive some messages from them for our Anzac commemorations early in Term 2. In addition to our service to be held on Thursday, 23

rd April, we are preparing to commemorate 100 years of

ANZAC when Sydney or the Bush Centenary of Anzac incursion will visit our school. A flyer will be sent out week one of Term 2 with all details of this fabulous commemoration.

Japanese 日本語news

Connect and Communicate with Nihon Term 1 has seen a variety of activities in the Japanese classroom and the school was treated recently when Sakura sensei wore her yukata, a summer kimono for Harmony Day celebrations. Japanese classes have seen the students learning a new game called ‘Guriko’ and we also enjoyed our old favourite ‘Tamaire’. Japanese classes also welcomed some Japanese student visitors just for one day on Tuesday for some language, friendship and culture exchange. Earlier in the term we prepared how to talk about ourselves in simple Japanese. We will need this language again of course, when the Palyago tour visits Yuluma from August 20-28. Early in Term 2, on May 5, to celebrate Kodomo no hi, Children’s Day in Japan, the P and C are coordinating a special Japanese/Aussie recess. Snacks with an Aussie or Japanese flavour will be especially for sale on this day. More details early next term. Ms Margo Whittle Japanese Language Teacher and History Teacher

National Ride2School Day – Tuesday, 17th March Thank you to those families who got up extra early to ride, walk, scoot or skate to school for The National Ride2School Day. We had plenty of hungry students to feed and did so by having a Sausage sizzle manned by Mr Anthony Jones and Mr Mitch Whalan. Milo’s were busily being made by Mrs Wendy Whalan and student leaders. Thank you to staff and families who donated pikelets, fruit and muffins also. James and Daniel from The Bicycle Entrepreneur Osborne Park were kept busy with bike checks and were so impressed with how many students rode their bikes to school.

A quote from James and Daniel in an email sent to school; „We had fun and got a good workout at the same time. We were blown away by the positivity of all the teachers, parents and students! We look forward to coming back next year!’ Students were given the opportunity on this day to ride their mode of transport at Funky Fitness and then again at lunch time. What a fantastic day had by all. Keep up the daily fitness but remember that if you choose to ride to school please lock it up at the bike racks.

Sculptures by the Sea Excursion As an extension of the Visual Arts programme at Yuluma, 30 students from across Years 2-5 attended Cottesloe Beach to view the Sculptures by the Sea Exhibition. The students travelled to Cottesloe with parents and received a Kids’ Guide to the sculptures and navigated their way around the beautiful beach environment with their small group. The children met the exhibiting Artist Annette Thas, whose work titled ‘Dame Cockatoo and Entourage’. Annette talked about her work to the students and they could interact with the sculpture by posing in the ‘stand in’. We then created flower and insect sculptures using fine wire, paper and paint, being guided by Annette and the volunteer staff. We had a lovely day at the beach as well as learning about sculpture and having the added insight of the history that inspired Annette’s work. Many of the students voted for their favourite sculpture in the children’s choice award. Many thanks again to all the parents who attended on the day and in particular Mrs Wendy Whalan and Mrs Amanda Vanderputten for co-ordinating the transport.

Harmony Day Incursion and Excursion On Monday, 16

th March, the Year 2/3 and 3/4 students participated in a wonderful kite making workshop facilitated by

Michael. Michael showed the students a range of different types of kites and then we made sugar glider kites and tested them out on the oval. He also flew his huge kites and the children all received parachutes dropped by the koala climbing along the rope of the kites. We were invited by Sarah Cairns from the City of Stirling to attend the Harmony Day activities on Friday, 20

th March at

the Herb Graham Recreation Centre. The students had a wonderful time watching performances as well as a sausage sizzle, pony rides, jumping castles and petting the baby animals. Some students had their faces painted and others enjoyed participating in craft activities as well as joining in with Persian dancing and listening to a range of singing performances. We had a great day. Thank you to Ms Poole and Mrs Mehravari for all their assistance. Ms Carmel Reilly Art Specialist Teacher

Technology and Enterprise The Year 3/4 class looked at scarecrows and the reason for their use. We were given the task of designing a scarecrow to make and place in the new Yuluma Primary School Community Garden. When the designs were finished we put them on the pinup board and voted for the one we would make. Reese Opies’ design received the most votes so we got into groups to make each part of the scarecrow. It is now complete and sitting on one of the garden beds doing his job. Please respect and don’t vandalize him as we are very proud of our work.

Running Club Next term we will be taking our running up a notch in preparation for the Cross Country and The Chevron City to Surf Fun Run. To prepare the students for this, we plan to take our runners, on occasion off site by running to nearby parks of the school (Birralee Reserve and Millett Park). A consent form will be sent out to these students at the beginning of Term 2. The goal of this exercise is to enhance our already existing fitness for long distance running and to keep the running interesting. We will require extra parent help on the days we do go off site so if you are able to assist please let the office know to pass on to Mrs Maslin. If you can only spare 1 day of the term to assist we would be more than grateful for this. Dates in which we would go off site will be in the letter sent out to students at the end of this term. Keep fit, Mrs Maslin

OSH Club – Outside of School Hours Care Good day from Yuluma OSHClub These past weeks we have been looking at different cultures whilst celebrating Harmony Day. We made Japanese blossom trees, created some Aboriginal artwork, coloured in and drew different flags from around the world and we finished off by making a Harmony Day poster with our hand prints and photos on it. We also made some yummy food; Mexican Tacos, St Patrick’s Day cookies and Aussie fairly bread. We planted some cress in cups a couple of weeks ago and faithfully each day the children are watering the seeds. We are very proud of the children here in OSHClub and how they are showing responsibility. We have had so much fun this term and before we say goodbye for this term we want to remind our OSHClub parents to update their enrolment forms and make sure to include an emergency contact. Happy Easter everyone and we will see you next term.

Thank you! We would like to thank both Mr Brownlies’ (Archie’s father and grandfather – Archie is in Kindy this year) for volunteering their time and expertise in removing a dead tree in our Kindy playground. What a great community we have here at Yuluma.

Pre-Primary Garden Beds On Fridays the Pre-Primary students have been learning all about plants with Mrs Timms. Thanks to the wonderful busy bee on the 13

th March we were able to plant some plants and seeds donated by our families! Children worked in

small groups to plant and then create signs for the garden bed. We all collected sticks to put them on. Elissa patiently helped put the signs together once laminated and then into the garden bed. We can't wait to watch our plants grow!
