Chatacteristic

His marriage to Sheila will benefit Mr. Birling’s family.

Eva Smith/Daisy Renton• Meeting (where, when,

how)

• He took her as his Mistress

• End of the affair (when, why)

• “I met her first, some time in March last year, in stalls bar at the Palace.”

• “Old Joe Meggarty… wedged her (Eva) into a corner… The girl [cried] for help. So I… got him out of the way… she’d better let me take her out of there. She agreed…”

• “So I insisted on Daisy moving into those rooms (Morgan Terrace) and I made her take some money…”

• [Inspector: But she became your mistress?] “Yes. I suppose it was inevitable.”

• “In the first week of September. I had to go away for several weeks then – on business… I broke it off definitely before I went.”

• At first, Gerald pretends that he never knew Eva which shows that he is not as willing as Sheila and Eric to admit his part in the girl's death. Although, he is not as careless as Mr. and Mrs. Birling, who show no remorse for the girl’s death and are more worried about their own interests.

• Gerald is the first one to try to come up with as much evidence as possible to prove that the Inspector is a fake so that he would not feel responsible for Eva’s death. It is Gerald who confirms that the local force has no officer by the name of Goole and he who finds out from the infirmary that there has not been a suicide case in months. Gerald puts his efforts into defending himself whereas he should really concentrate on changing his behavior instead.

• In the end, Gerald has not realize his faults. He did not learn that he should have a sense of social responsibility. Consequently, Sheila, who did learn her lesson, noticed this and declined to take back the engagement ring from him.
