Following on from the Students’ School Reports sent home at the end of last term, Parent/Teacher interviews are being planned. Please take the time to visit your student’s Teachers to discuss their progress at school.
Please complete the Interview times forms and return to school as soon as possible to enable the Teachers to plan sufficient times for all students. School Review We are currently in the middle of our School Review. The Panel for the Review is –
Chaired by an independent Reviewer

Upon completion of the Review I will advise the school community of the result. School Carpark A reminder to all parents the School Carpark is only accessible to Staff and authorized personal. WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK
Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents at each school. It is designed to assist our school in gaining an understanding of parents’ perception of school climate,
student engagement and relationships with our parent community. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.
The survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to complete. The survey can be accessed via desktop computer, laptop, tablet or mobile at any convenient time within the fieldwork period from Monday 7th August to Sunday 27th August. Approximately 25 per cent of parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. The online survey is available in English, Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (Hakha) and Hindi. Survey language guides will be provided in a range of languages including Albanian, Bengali, Burmese, Cantonese, Dari, Filipino, Greek, Gujarati, Indonesian, Japanese, Karen, Khmer, Korean, Macedonian, Malayalam, Pashto, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Serbian, Sinhalese, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Tamil, Telugu, Turkish or Urdu.
The survey results will be reported back to our school at the end of September. Southern Cross Primary School may inform that the survey results will be communicated to parents through annual reporting. Last year we used the survey results to plan for building stronger communication with our families. i Sea, i Care Term 2 Excursion
In Term 2, as ambassadors of i Sea, i Care, we went on an
excursion to Frangipani Court and Frog Hollow Reserve. We
learned about waste management and the effects of litter
and pollution on aquatic life in our waterways.
We started at Frangipani Court where we learned all about
how litter traps work and we watched the litter trap being
emptied by the crew from Melbourne Water. All the rubbish
that gets washed away is then collected by these litter traps
and is taken to the city dump. If the rubbish is not collected
by a litter trap, it finds its way straight into Pt. Phillip Bay where is can be consumed by
sea animals.
Next, we went to Frog Hollow Reserve where our afternoon was split up into different
activities like planting shrubs and trees, water testing and examining water
invertebrates.
We tested the water because it helps us to understand the effect
water health has on marine life. We put tiny tablets in the water
tubes, which then changed the colour to tell us the levels of
phosphates, nitrates and dissolved oxygen etc. From our testing, we
discovered that the quality of the water was
OK but could definitely be better.
We examined water invertebrates to find out what kind of
species lived in the water. This also gave us an idea of what
the quality of the water was like. We were given butterfly nets
and we had to get freshwater invertebrate samples.
We planted 200 trees and shrubs on the
day in Frog Hollow Reserve. i Sea i Care ambassadors have
assisted with planting trees in the area for many years. In fact,
we found some huge trees that were planted by students of
Southern Cross Primary School in 1999.
It was a fantastic day and we learnt so much about waste
management in our community and how our litter effects the
environment. You can help the environment at home by
cutting down your use of plastic; nude lunches are a great
place to start.
