Story, Chairman DCUC, VyStar CU, Jacksonville, Florida I look forward to seeing each and every DCUC member in August at DCUC’s Annual Conference and meeting in Spo- kane Washington. As has been the case year after year for 43 years, our annual conference has everything needed to pro- vide our attendees a superb conference experience. It all starts with location, and Spokane Washington and the Davenport Hotel have been noted as the Pacific Northwest’s “treasure.” In fact, recent reports in the Conde Nast Traveler magazine, listed the Davenport Hotel among the top 100 mainland U.S. hotels for 2006, and placed the Davenport on the 2007 “Gold List” of the best hotels and resorts in the world! When you add Washington State’s “ever- greens,” Coeur D’Alene, and the resort’s floating “green” to the mix, I believe you will agree this year’s location is picture perfect! e conference begins on Saturday August 18 with the 14th annual Vice Admiral Vincent Lascara GolfTournament at 7:00 a.m. and an optional tour Lun- cheon Cruise on Lake Coeur D’Alene. On Sunday the Overseas Sub-Council meeting takes place at 12 noon and the grand opening of DCUC’s Showcase runs from 1-3 p.m. Our Military Representa- tives and Corporate Partners kick-off the conference’s educational sessions with S ince 1972 DCUC’s Overseas Sub-council, consisting of Council members with an overseas geographical franchise, has met annually to receive updates from the Department of Defense, NCUA, credit union trade associations, and corporate industry. Year after year A Tradition of Excellence— DCUC’s Overseas Sub-council Meeting the program improves in terms of quality and quantity…and this year’s event was no exception! Number 35 was held in Florence, Italy last month, and based on written and verbal feedback, simply said, it was outstanding! Pentagon Federal Credit Union, this year’s co-host, laid the ground work for success early on by asking Les Janka, Vice President, STRATFOR, to provide the keynote address. And provide he did! Scanning the globe, Les offered his honest appraisal of today’s geo- political and security environments and the uncertainty that lies within each—present and future. His analysis provided some insight to the international issues facing the United States…issues surrounding Russia, China, North Korea, the Middle East, and Africa…and the instability and insecurity created by the economic, political and national elements of power. At the conclusion of his presentation, the acronym, VUCA, came readily to mind— Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous. at’s the environment in which we live today; that’s the environment of tomorrow. Understand it…plan accordingly…and in the case of defense credit unions, be prepared to continue supporting it, for our military will be engaged at one level or another. e Honorable JoAnn Johnson followed Les Janka, and was quick to acknowledge the commitment of defense credit unions and expressed her deep gratitude to all for their support of the military community. Aside from her update on NCUA, JoAnn addressed the agency’s support of DoD the past few months (on theTalent Amendment) and was equally appreciative of DoD’s willingness to work with NCUA and heed the agency’s advice on all matters impacting credit unions. e end results: DoD’s draft regulation focused on three preda- tory lending products—payday loans, vehicle title loans, and Refund Anticipation Loans (RALs)…and for the most part, eliminated unintended and unnecessary consequences. CUNA’s Chairman, Allan McMorris, and NAFCU’s Senior Vice President, Jay Morris, also discussed the Military Consumer Lending regulation, and acknowledged DoD’s good faith efforts to do right by credit unions. Although some clarifications are needed, overall the draft rule is a major leap in the right direction, as it focuses on the true intent of the law —predatory lending.

The United States Army to Celebrate 232 Years Since its birth on June 14, 1775--over a year before the Declaration of Independence-—the United

States Army has played a vital role in the growth and development of our nation.

It was on that date that the Second Continental Congress authorized the enlistment of ten com-

panies of riflemen in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The next day, George Washington was

appointed commander in chief.

Soldiers have fought 11 wars, from the American Revolution through the Cold War, the Gulf War,

to the current War on Terrorism.

The United States Army has been a cornerstone of America’s freedom, military power and service

to other nations and the Defense Council is pleased to wish the Army a Happy Birthday!

The Davenport HotelThe Davenport Hotel is listed among the “top 100 mainland U.S. hotels” in the November issue of Condé Nast Traveler magazine. The designation comes as part of the magazine’s 2006 Readers’ Choice Awards. “How about that,” said Davenport Hotel owner Walt Worthy when he heard the news on his cell phone. Even more good news, the same magazine put The Davenport Hotel on its 2007 “Gold List” of the best hotels and resorts in the world. The Davenport earned high marks for rooms, service, food, location and design. In its review, the magazine called The Davenport Hotel “a Pacific Northwest treasure.” “These honors were earned by each and every one of our employees,” said Davenport Hotel and Tower Managing Director, Lynnelle Caudill. “The building was cold, dark and forgotten for 15 years so we’ve had to re-earn our reputation for operating ‘one of America’s exceptional hotels’ all over again. We‘ve done that in four years which is an incredible accomplishment.” From the magazine’s website: “Condé Nast Traveler is committed to reporting on travel fairly and impartially. We travel anonymously and pay our own way.” Other Washington State hotels on the Gold List were the Fairmont Olympic, Inn at the Market, Alexis, Marriott Waterfront—all in Seattle—and the Salish Lodge and Inn at Langley. No hotels in Idaho or Montana made the list.
